Russell L. Malchow

March 25, 1917 to May 10, 2012

FRANKLIN, NEB. - Russell Lee Malchow, 95, of Franklin died Thursday, May 10, at his home.

He was born March 25, 1917, on the family farm in Francesville, Ind., to the late William and Mary (Moore) Malchow. On June 4, 1942, he married Melba V. Joquel. She died Oct. 24, 1999.

Survivors include his four children, Ann Ivey (Ralph) of Grass Valley, Calif.; Edythe Eberhart (Steve), of Cortez, Colo.; Ruth Stewart (David) of Evergreen Park, Ill.; and Russell L. Malchow, Jr. (Pamela) of Las Vegas; as well as 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Malchow graduated from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Ill., in 1939, and from Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, in 1942, and was then ordained in the Evangelical and Reformed Church, a predecessor denomination to the United Church of Christ in which Rev. Malchow held ministerial standing until his death. Following their marriage,  the couple moved to Billingsville, Mo., for Rev. Malchow’s first pastorship at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Malchows later served churches in Fraser, Mich. (1945 to 1962), Bayard, Neb. (1962-1972), the Thedford, Halsey, and Seneca congregations in Thomas County Parish, Neb. (1972-1978), and Franklin, Neb. (1978 until his retirement from full-time ministry in 1985). 

The Malchows remained in Franklin and pursued an active “retirement” in interim ministry through 1993, serving UCC congregations in Grant, Chadron, Coleridge, Hayes Center, and Ogallala, as well as the First Christian Church in Kearney.  From 1994 until his ultimate retirement in 2008 he served in the United Methodist Church, first at Bloomington UMC and then in the Wilsonville and Hendley United Methodist congregations. Rev. Malchow truly loved God’s creation and loved serving God’s people. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed hiking and camping with his family. 

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Hutchins Funeral Home, Franklin, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. A flower service will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at the church. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday (May 17) at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Franklin with the Revs. Herman Keen and David Stewart officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery at Franklin.

Kay Lucy Clemons

October 11, 1937 to May 30, 2012

WINAMAC - Kay Lucy Clemons, 74, of Brownsburg, (formerly of Star City) died at 5:45 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, at Brownsburg Meadows Rehabilitation Facility, Brownsburg.

She was born Oct. 11, 1937, in Fort Wayne, to the late George William and Pauline Peting Bryan. She married Allon Clemons on Oct. 22, 1960 in Reynolds.  He died Sept. 29, 2009.

Mrs. Clemmons was a registered nurse. She graduated from Parkview Methodist School of Nursing in Fort Wayne. She was retired from Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.She was a member of the American Sewing Guild. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church at Eagle Creek in Brownsburg.She moved to Brownsburg in 2010. Shey was an avid reader, liked sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was involved in Bible Study Fellowship. She also enjoyed wintering in Florida.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday (June 5), at the funeral home with Rev. Lewis Stier officiating. Burial will be in Star City West Cemetery, Star City.

Paul A. Krulik

March 30, 1930 to May 23, 2012

WINAMAC - Paul A. Krulik, 82, of Winamac, died at 11:57 a.m., Wednesday, May 23, at the Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

He was born March 30, 1930, in North Judson, to the late Frank and Mary Surma Krulik. He married Loretta Skalon on Aug. 4, 1951 in North Judson. She survives.

Mr. Krulik served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service to his country, he worked for Pennsylvania Railroad for 10 years. He then worked for NIPSCO and retired in 1990 after 32 years of employment.

He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Medaryville. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #1561 in Winamac. He enjoyed farming and going to auctions. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The rosary will be recited by the Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m., followed by a scriptural wake service. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday (May 26), at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Medaryville, with Rev. Martin Sandhage officiating. Burial will be in Idle Cemetery, Francesville. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion.

Memorial donations may be given to St. Henry's Catholic Church in the form of masses, Riley Hospital for Children, or to the American Diabetes Association.

Frank Doty

March 10, 1926 to May 20, 2012

WINAMAC - Frank Doty, 86, of Winamac, passed away at 7:50 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at his granddaughter's residence in Ft. Wayne.

He was born March 10, 1926 in English Lake, to the late Walter and Catherine Friedel Doty.

Mr. Doty was a lifetime resident of Winamac and enjoyed living on the Tippecanoe River. He liked fishing and trapping. His neighbors called him "The Old Man of the River". He also enjoyed gardening, antiquing, junking, and looking for old bottles in the river. Before he became ill, he was well known as a prankster among his friends and family. In the last few years, Frank and Judd could be found on the "Liars Bench" sharing stories. 
He loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. They brought him a lot of joy.

Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m., (Wednesday, May 23), at the funeral home with Rev. Edward Clark officiating.

Ronald Fletcher

July 3, 1990 to May 18, 2012

WINAMAC - Ronald Joseph Alan "Ronnie" Fletcher, 21, of North Judson, passed away at 8:26 p.m., Friday, May 18, at IU Health Starke Hospital in Knox.

He was born July 3, 1990, in LaPorte, to Rhonda and James Fletcher.

Mr. Fletcher graduated from North Judson-San Pierre High School in 2008. He was an outgoing person with a great personality. He always knew how to cheer people up. He loved music, especially singing. He enjoyed playing XBox360 online with his brothers. He also liked to work on cars. He loved his girlfriend, Melissa and his family very much. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him and loved him

Visitation will be from 11 a.m., to 12 noon, Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon, (Wednesday, May 23), at the funeral home. Burial will be in Winamac Cemetery, Winamac.

Maxwell C. Frain

June 2, 1927 to May 17, 2012

WINAMAC - Maxwell Clyde Frain, 84, Winamac, passed away at 8:44 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at the Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac. 

He was born June 2, 1927, in Winamac, to the late Clyde Harold and Eithel Viola Wilson Frain. He married Nila Jean Clark on May 2, 1948, at the First Christian Church in Winamac.  She survives.

Mr. Frain was a member of the First Christian Church, Winamac where he had served as deacon, elder, and trustee. He was a 50-year member of Winamac Lodge #262 F&AM. He was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite and ORAK Shrine. He was a charter member of the former Winamac Rotary Club. He had also been a member of the Winamac Kiwanis Club and the Pulaski County Red Cross. He served 12 years as a school board member for the Winamac Schools and Eastern Pulaski School Corporation. He also served several years as Pulaski County Deputy Coroner. He was a proud member of the Pulaski County Republican Party.

In 1950, Mr. Frain took a job driving the ambulance for Kennedy Funeral Home. The next year, he moved his employment to Fry & Lange Funeral Home, Winamac. In 1953, he graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and returned to Winamac where he was employed by Russell Fry and Walter Lange. He became a licensed Indiana funeral director in 1954 and maintained an active license until his death. His caring and compassion was reflected in the manner in which he served the families he cared for and also his community. Max and Jean purchased the Fry & Lange Funeral Home in 1969 and in 1976 changed the name to Frain Mortuary. He served as president of the Indiana Funeral Director's Association in 1978. Mr. Frain and his sons Dan and Sam, were recongnized as the first IFDA family to produce three presidents of the association. 

Mr. Frain had fond memories of the family fishing trips to northern Minnesota. He enjoyed his retirement years in Naples, FL and Monticello. He especially liked being on the beach and spending time in his boat. He had a good sense of humor. He enjoyed smoking his pipe, listening to WKVI, reading the newspaper, and taking his dogs for a walk. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. 

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. Masonic services will be at 6 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday (May 21), at the funeral home, with Rev. Bert Woolson and Rev. Edward Clark officiating. Burial will be in Winamac Cemetery, Winamac.

Memorial donations may be given to Riley Hospital for Children.

Lester A. Hurlburt Sr.

May 10, 1940 to May 14, 2012

WINAMAC - Lester A. Hurlburt Sr., 72, of Winamac, passed away at 11:52 p.m., Monday, May 14, at St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana in Indianapolis.

He was born May 10, 1940, in Ropley, to the late Edward Uriah and Margaret Elsie Kirkham Hurlburt. He married Barbara Mills on June 23, 1984 in Winamac. She survives.

Mr. Hurlburt was retired from the Plymouth Tube Company in Winamac.He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Winamac.He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and working in the outdoors. He liked to watch westerns and game shows on TV. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
