Max L. Russell

May 10, 1918 to June 16, 2012

ROYAL CENTER - Max L. Russell, 94, of Royal Center passed away at 12:05 a.m., Saturday, June 16, at Pulaski Healthcare Center in Winamac.

Born on May 10, 1918 in Star City, he was the son of the late Elihu and Florence (Vangundy) Russell. On Aug. 13, 1939 he married Emma Jean Warner. She preceded him in death on July 29, 2011.

Survivors include his children, Darwin “Doc” Russell and wife Jo of Winamac, Sandy Haselby and husband Wayne of Royal Center, Judy Rogers and husband Phil of Royal Center, Connie Frame and husband Stan of Royal Center, Ron Russell and wife Linda of Royal Center and Don Russell and wife Karol of Royal Center; brother, Dale Russell of Frankfort and sister Julia Baker of Logansport. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren with one on the way, 1 great great grandson with one on the way and 2 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Galen Russell and Delos Russell and sisters, Alice Smith and Lois Davis.

Mr. Russell was a 1936 Star City High School graduate. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a Purple Heart Recipient. He was formerly employed at Logan Machine for 17 years and he retired in 1995 from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier after 36 years. He was a member of Royal Center United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 60, V.F.W. #3790 and the National Rural Letter Carrier’s Association. He enjoyed meeting his friends at McDonald’s in Winamac.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, Royal Center Chapel. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday (June 19), at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Drane officiating. Burial with military rites will be performed at Star City West Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Royal Center United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.

Robert P. Lizenby

February 14, 1925 to June 18, 2012

FRANCESVILLE - Robert P. "Bob" Lizenby, 87, of Winamac, passed away at 6:15 a.m., Monday, June 18, at his daughter's home in Plymouth.

He was born Feb. 14, 1925. He married Naomi M. Stellter on Sept. 15, 1945 in Winamac. She died Jan. 19, 2009.

Mr. Lizenby was a member of the Francesville United Methodist Church. He also attended Bethel Bible Church in Winamac. He was a member of Gideons International. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Francesville Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. Bob served on the Pulaski Health Care Foundation board. 

Mr. Lizenby and his wife owned and operated Lizenby Insurance Agency for many years. He was also co-owner of the C & L Ford Motor dealership in Medaryville. He was also a farmer and dairy farmer. He liked woodworking, and enjoyed writing poetry and stories and doing the family geneology. He also enjoyed going out to eat. He loved his family very much.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday (June 21), at Bethel Bible Church, Winamac, with Rev. Thomas Hopewell officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorial donations may be given to the Francesville United Methodist Church, Bethel Bible Church, or Gideons International.

Judy E. Lewis

March 25, 1945 to June 15, 2012

WINAMAC - Judith E. "Judy" Lewis, 67, of Monterey, died at 2:18 a.m., Friday, June 15, at her residence. 

She was born March 25, 1945, in Rochester, to the late Joseph and Jenette Cinninger Lewis. She married Loren W. Lewis on Jan. 28, 1962 in Argos. He survives.

Mrs. Lewis graduated from Argos High School and later in life she attended Ancilla College. After they were married, the Lewises lived and worked in Wolcott for several years before moving to Monterey where they purchased their longtime family home. Mrs. Lewis worked at the Harts Schaffner and Marx factory in Rochester for several years. She dedicated most of her life to raising her family and working on the Lewis family farm.

She was an avid book reader. She was a NASCAR fan. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and taking care of her yard. She loved her dog, Maggie. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors. She loved her grandchildren very much and dedicated as much time as possible to each and everyone of them.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday (June 21) at the funeral home with Rev. Nancy Foster officiating. Burial will take be in Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Monterey.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Forrest C. Goble

August 9, 1922 to June 14, 2012

WINAMAC - Forrest Calvin "Bud" Goble, 89, of Winamac, passed away at 3:55 p.m., Thursday, June 14, at Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac.

He was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Hammond, to the late Lee and Lily Cloud Goble. He married Mary Maxine Bishop on July 12, 1944 at the Church of the Nazarene in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 2000.

Mr. Goble was a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University and attended one year of graduate school at Indiana University. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Winamac, where he served for many years as the Sunday School Superintendent and as a board member. He also served on the board of trustees of Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL, for 26 years, and on the advisory board for the Northwest Indiana District Church of the Nazarene for 32 years. He was a long-standing member of Gideons International.

Mr. Goble served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1944, just months after he and Maxine married, his unit was shipped overseas. He was a staff sergeant in the 99th Infantry Division. On Dec. 18th, his unit was captured by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge. He was in a POW Camp at Stalag XIII-C for 6 months until the war ended. His war stories are now in print and available from his daughter, Margaret Steinacker or on Amazon. The book, written by Rose Goble, is entitled, Captured. Mr. Goble was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Mr. Goble worked for many years at Goble Olds and International Harvestor Tractors and Equipment business. Later he served as the trust officer at First Union Bank. When First National Bank of Monterey opened its branch in Winamac, he became the manager until he retired.

First and foremost, Mr. Goble loved the Lord. That love spilled into his daily life with his family and others. He was continually helping someone whether spiritually, emotionally, or financially. His outgoing personality and genuine concern for others will always be remembered as his legacy.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at Frain Mortuary; and after 9 a.m., Monday at the church. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., (Monday, June 18), at the Winamac Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. David Webb officiating. Burial will be in Paul's Chapel Cemetery, rural Winamac. 
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion and the VFW.

Memorial donations may be given to Gideons International.

Nancy L. Motuliak

August 14, 1937 to June 2, 2012

LAFAYETTE - Nancy L. Motuliak, 74, of Lafayette, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital East in Lafayette 6:25 a.m., Saturday June 2, where she had been a patient for three days.

She was born in Winamac, Aug. 14, 1937, the daughter of the late Herman Henry and Leona Pearl Smith Rausch, and had resided in Lafayette since 1955.

Surviving is a daughter, Michelle Lynn Jubera (husband Robert) of St. John; 3 sons, Marc Peter Motuliak (wife Kimberly) of Lafayette; Michael Anthony Motuliak (wife Karen Arth) of Battle Ground; Matthew Kassian Motuliak of Lafayette; 1 sister, Mary Frances Kiser of Royal Center; and a brother, James Rausch (wife Jean) of Star City. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Rausch.

Mrs. Motuliak was a graduate of Winamac High School and attended Indiana University at Bloomington. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral; a member of the Altar & Rosary Society; a current member of the Parish Council; served as a Eucharistic Minister; a member of Christ Renews His Parish and was a member and past president of Delta Chi Sigma Sorority, Indiana Province.

She loved to travel, especially group travel and spending good times with her many friends. She enjoyed watching Purdue basketball, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Chicago Cubs. She liked to garden, especially her flower garden and was a great fan of Elvis Presley. She was employed at National Homes for several years, and later as a court reporter for the Tippecanoe County Courts, and had also been employed as an executive assistant in the Purdue University Civil Engineering Department.

Friends may call from the Rosary at 4:45 p.m., until 7 p.m., Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Lafayette. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday (June 8), at St. Mary's Cathedral with Fr. Eric Underwood, Fr. Dan Gartland and Fr. Robert Klemme officiating, with interment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

If friends desire, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Cathedral.

Mary Irene Nice Newell

March 24, 1944 - June 10, 2012

TUCSON, ARIZ. - Mary Irene Nice Newell, 68, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Winamac, died Sunday, June 10, following a valiant fight with cancer for over six years.

Born on March 24, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Myra Nice.

Survivors include her husband, William Newell; a daughter, Christine Emswiler; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Dorothy Nice; a sister, Darlene Fritz; and two brothers, Bill and Bob Nice.

Mrs. Newell graduated in 1962 from Winamac High School and attended Indiana Business College. She worked for many years as an executive secretary. She was an accomplished musician and as a youth was active in the Methodist youth fellowship.

Local memorial services will be held at a later date.

Yvonne I. Brown

May 7, 1937 - June 8, 2012

WINAMAC - Yvonne I. Brown, 75, Winamac, passed away Friday, June 8.

She was born May 7, 1937, in Chicago.

She is survived by husband Dale Brown of Winamac, sons Alan (Lissa) Brown and Steve Brown, both of Valparaiso, and daughter Carol (Keith) Tripenfeldas of North Judson.

Mrs. Brown worked for Starke County Welfare.

There will be no visitation or services. Burial will be at Midwest Cremation Center, Inc. 

Memorials may be made to the family.
