Harold T. Posthuma

August 12, 1935 to December 31, 2014

WINAMAC - Harold T. Posthuma, 79, of Monterey, passed away at 8:45 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Logansport Memorial Hospital, Logansport.

He was born Aug. 12, 1935 in Illinois to the late Garrett and Florence Kennedy Posthuma.

Mr. Posthuma served in the U.S. Army. He was a former member of the American Legion. He worked for United Telephone Company for over 40 years. He enjoyed restoring John Deere Tractors. He liked NASCAR, old westerns, and Ford trucks. He liked to have a good time and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held by the family.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Frain Mortuary, Winamac. 

Carroll J. Messer

April 10, 1931 to December 31, 2014

FRANCESVILLE - Carroll J. Messer, 83, of Francesville, passed away at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Parkview Haven Retirement Home, Francesville.

He was born April 10, 1931 in Peoria, IL to the late Paul Ernest and Nathalia Stoller Messer. He married Annabelle L. Yaggie on Oct. 22, 1958 in Francesville. She survives.

Mr. Messer lived most of his life in Francesville and was a former resident of Southern California. He had been a school bus driver for the Bear Valley Unified School District in Big Bear Lake, CA,  retiring after 17 years. He also was a bulk gas delivery driver in California. Hel was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Francesville. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville, and one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the Apostolic Christian Church, Francesville, with the ministers of the church officiating. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorial donations may be given to Parkview Haven Retirement Home. 

Herbert Newman Sr.

November 20, 1929 to December 24, 2014

CULVER - Herbert Newman Sr., 85, of Culver died Wednesday, Dec. 24, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

Herb was born Nov. 20, 1929 to John Allen and May (Warmbrod) Newma, one of six children. He married Norma (Good) Newman on Nov. 19, 1955. She preceded him in death in January 1994.

He is survived by sons John (Jeanne) of Winamac, Herbert Jr. (Janet) of Culver, Arthur (Melissa) of Winamac;
daughters Barbara (Warren) Penrod of Culver, Geri of Culver, Mary of Bennington, daughter-in-law Marilyn
(Edward) of Star City; 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; sister Helen Samuelson of Plymouth, brother-in-law Norman Good of Fishers, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son Edward, grandson Douglas, brothers Charles, Jesse, J Allen, and sister Lovina Wesson.

Mr. Newman worked on the family-owned dairy farm in Culver. He served in the Army in the post-World War II occupation of Germany and was involved in the atomic bomb testing in Nevada. He acted as the quartermaster of the Finney-Shilling VFW Post 6919 and was a member of Collins Tasch American Legion in Monterey and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus. During his early retirement, he was a frequent driver for the Culver-Union Township EMS.
Mr. Newman considered his greatest accomplishments to be raising seven children who grew up to be good people, volunteering in the community; and remaining married for 38 years. He loved and adored his family. He did not consider any episode in his life a disappointment and cited his kids and grandkids as the most important things in his life. When asked if there was anything he wanted to change in his life, he said no, because he had a complete satisfaction of his life. He spent most of his later years with family, friends and his beloved dogs.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 29, at the Odom Funeral Home. Father Jeff Largent will officiate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church, Culver. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Culver-Union Township EMS or the Marshall County Community
Foundation-Zion Cemetery Trust.

Walter J. Fox

May 8, 1921 to December 20, 2014

VALPARAISO - Walter J. Fox, 93, passed away peacefullySaturday, Dec. 20, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.

Born on May 8, 1921, to the late Rudolph and Ella (nee McLochlin) Fox, he was raised on a farm in Star City.

He is survived by children: Connie "Susie" (Bill) Reese of Crown Point, Fred and Dennis Meyers of LaPorte, Brenda (Joe) Straight of New Carlisle, Brian (Jenny) Meyers of Valparaiso, Kandi (Carl) Taskey of Battle Ground, and adopted daughter Mary (David) Conners; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Art (Sis) Fox of Winamac, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by two loving wives, Irene F. Meyers and C. Joy Meyers (nee Hyatte); five brothers; one sister; one daughter-in-law.

Mr. Fox served in World War II in Germany as an MP. He was a welder by trade but was forced to retire in 1969 due to an injury at his job. He was a member of the VFW Post 1728 in Winamac. He was best known for his high family values and passion for gardening.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 26, 20, at Dykes Funeral Home, 2305 N. Campbell St., Valparaiso. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Union Mills Cemetery, Union Mills.

Memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso.

 

Mary L. Hattabaugh

October 17, 1949 to December 29, 2014

FRANCESVILLE - Mary Lois Hattabaugh, 65, of Ft. Wayne, (formerly of Francesville) died at 8:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 29, at her home.

She was born Oct. 17, 1949 to the late William Newton and Esther V. Ballard Hattabaugh.

Survivors include:

William E. Hattabaugh, Rensselaer, Brother 
Audrey Tinkle, Sister

Ms. Hattabaugh was disabled and lived most of her life in Ft. Wayne where she was cared for by many loving people over the years. Despite the challenges she faced, she did enjoy visits from family and doing artwork.

No services will be held. Mary will be laid to rest with her family at Osborne Cemetery in rural Jasper County.

Memorial donations may be made to ResCare of Ft. Wayne or Osborne Cemetery.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville.

Terry L. Matthews

October 31, 1971 to December 24, 2014

WINAMAC - Terry Lee Matthews, 43, Winamac, passed away at 4:32 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24, at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Oct. 31, 1971, in Hammond, to John and Reathey Flippo Matthews.

Mr. Matthews was a former truck driver. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed time with his nephew. He  enjoyed life. He will be sadly missed by his family.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Burial will be at the Alexander Heinemann Memorial Cemetery Ora.

Memorial donations may be given to the family to help with funeral expenses.. 

Paul L. Archer

February 4, 1957 to December 25, 2014

MEDARYVILLE - Paul L. Archer, 57, of Medaryville, passed away at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 25, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 4, 1957, in Winamac, to the late Earl Wesley and Alladene Ruth Poisel Archer. He married Sheri Terpstra on July 6, 2013. She survives.

Mr. Archer  worked as a fork lift driver at VanGuard National Trailors in Monon. He was a member of the sons of the American Legion in Medaryville for seven years. He enjoyed playing golf, watching Jeopardy and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2, 2015 at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel Medaryville. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m., (Friday, Jan. 2), at the funeral home, with Chaplain Robert L. Rawlins officiating. Entombment will be at Independence Cemetery, Medaryville.
