Beverly Powers

WINAMAC - Beverly Powers, 72, of 900 W. SR 14, Winamac, passed away at 9:11 a.m.,Sunday, Nov. 21, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
She was born Dec. 12, 1937 in Winamac. On May 31, 1958 in Winamac, she married Robert Powers. He survives.

Mrs. Powers was the youngest of four children. Her ancestors reach back to the Revolutionary War when one of her great-great-grandfathers by the name of Aquila Tarman was born in Maryland on Aug. 15, 1776, making her a 10-generation citizen. She graduated from Winamac High School in 1955. After graduation she was a secretary in the engineering department of General Electric in Fort Wayne, then worked for United Telephone Company in Winamac.
Her career as a volunteer started early; she was a Kitchen Kadette Home Extension member holding a number of offices during her 10 years with the club. She sat on the committee that helped design and build the Community Center building in the Winamac town park.
She was an adult Girl Scout, serving as a troop leader for 10 years, and held positions in Tribal Trails Girl Scout Council as association chairman, Troop consultant, and a leader for Junior Scouts, Cadette Scouts and Senior Scout Advisor. She and her troops were the first recyclers in Pulaski County by holding glass drives; she sat on the steering committee when the idea of a recycling center was introduced in Winamac by Dr. Edward Hollenberg. She accompanied a troop of Senior Girl Scouts to Mexico in 1977. Also, as an adult Girl Scout, she led religious workshops for young scouts. She was an instructor for the Marian Medal for Cadettes, Growing With Mary for Juniors, and the Maria Nata medal for Brownies. Along with being the instructor for the Maria Nata program, she was the artist who designed the actual medal that was awarded. She was honored as a Pride of the Month recipient in 1979 by Tribal Trails Girl Scout Council in Logansport.
From 1980-82 Mrs. Powers worked for the clerk of the circuit court in Pulaski County. She was a member of the Pulaski County Democrat Central Committee, holding the office of secretary and was a precinct committeeman for Monroe IV. She was present at the inception of the WHS Alumni Organization in 1979, eventually holding offices of reporter, secretary, advisory board chairman, treasurer, and president, presiding over the 2005 Alumni Banquet.
She was an active participant at St. Peters Catholic parish where she had been a member for over 50 years. She was a member of the parish council youth committee and was also on the Lafayette Diocesan Youth Scout Committee. She was a religious education instructor for well over 20 years; was a special minister of the Eucharist, a Christian Mother, having once been the treasurer; and a charter member of the Ladies of Charity.
Other organizations that she worked with were the Pulaski County Historical Society and as a charter member of Pulaski County Arts Association. She attended the First Midwest Writer's Workshop ever held at Ball State University in Muncie in 1975. Her final years before retirement in 2001 were spent working at the Leader newspaper in Knox for Frank Allen, and The Pulaski County Journal newspaper in Winamac in the editorial departments. She was the author of "From My Little Corner of the Room" articles .
Friends may call from 3 to 8:30 p.m.,Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A rosary service will be at 7 p.m., followed by a Christian Mothers service, and a scriptural wake service. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday (Nov. 24), in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Winamac, with Rev. Martin Sandhage officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Winamac.

Robert Charles Federer

FRANCESVILLE - Robert Charles Federer, 85, of 8769 S 1300 W, Francesville, passed away at 6:46 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, in Rensselaer Care Center, Rensselaer.
He was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Rantoul, IL, to the late Stanislaus and Clara Lena Rausch Federer.

Mr. Federer had been a farmer in Pulaski County for over 60 years. He was a member of Saint Francis Solano Catholic Church in Francesville.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at the Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. The rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday (Nov. 22), at Saint Francis Solano Catholic Church, Francesville, with Rev. Paul White officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion.

WINAMAC - William E. Cramer, 88, of 911 N. Agnew St., Winamac, passed away at 12:30 p.m.,Thursday, Nov. 18, at Rivercrest Specialty Hospital, Mishawaka.
He was born Nov. 29, 1921, in Winamac, to the lateFred and Agnes Lidgard Cramer. He was married on June 4, 1949, in Winamac, to Mary Lou Appel. She passed away on Dec. 7, 2000. He married Marilyn L. Mars Hunter on Nov. 29, 2001, in Knox. She survives.

Mr. Cramer worked as a landscaper for the Indiana Department of Transportation prior to his retirement. He then served with Mary Lou Swartzell as superintendents of the Pleasant View Rest Home, Winamac.
He lived all of his life in Winamac. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winamac. He had been a member and lay minister at the former Ripley Gospel Chapel. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army on the Pacific front.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday (Nov. 22) at the funeral home with Pastor David Norris officiating.Burial will be in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac. WINAMAC - Jeffery L. Kottka, 53, of 316 W. Railroad St., Hamlet, passed away at 7:55 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Yellowstone Trail West of US 35 in Hamlet.
He was born Jan. 31, 1957, in Knox, to Albert and Dorothy Tretiak Kottka.

Mr. Kottka graduated from Oregan-Davis High School in 1976. He attended ITT Technical School in Fort Wayne for two years. He was a former employee of Winamac Steel. He also had worked in factories in LaPorte and Knox. He lived in Hamlet most of his life.

Kenneth E. Byers
May 28, 1944 to October 19, 2010
KALISPELL, MONT. - Kenneth Elwood Byers, 66, Montanna (formerly of Medaryville) passed away at his home, Oct. 19, surrounded by his family.
He was born May 28, 1944 in Medaryville, to the late Ennis and Vivian Byers. He married Jacqueline Dias-da-Cruz on Oct. 28, 1978 in Spokane, Wash. She survives.
He is also survived by his daughter, Nathalie and her fiance’ Jeremiah Maynard; son Nathan and grandson Tyron; brother, Phil and Febe Byers of Waatah; brother Paul and Gloria Byers of Medaryville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Byers graduated from Medaryville High School in 1962. After high school he drove semi-trucks across the country. During this time, he pursued his dream to be a pilot and earned his license. He was a pilot in Indiana, Texas and Alaska before moving to and settling in the Flathead Valley, MT. For a number of years, he taught aviation classes at FVCC. He also worked at Strand Aviation and was a chief flight instructor. In 1975, he was awarded Flight Instructor of the Year in his district.
In the 1980’s, Mr. Byers operated his own business from his home repairing photography equipment. His follow-up business venture was custom gun-smithing and reloading, which he continued to operate into this year. In 1991, he went to work as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Kalispell. It was from there that he retired in 2008. He attended Central Christian Church for many years, and later theFamily Life Christian Church.
Visitation will be Friday, from 12 noon until 6 p.m., at Johnson – Gloschat Funeral Home, Kalispell, MT. The funeral service will be held Saturday (Oct. 30), at 1:30 p.m.,at Family Life Christian Church on Foys Lake Road. Interment will follow at C.E. Conrad Cemetery, Kalispell, MT.

WINAMAC - Anna Marie Parcel, 94, of 624 E. 13th St., Winamac, passed away at 10:10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.
She was born Sept. 11, 1916, in Payne, OH, to the late Leujay and Bertha E. Lebold Perry. She married Gerald A. Parcel on Feb. 22, 1938, in Monterey. He died on Sept. 16, 1967.

Mrs. Parcel was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxillary for many years. She was a former employee of Russell's Old Trading Post, Winamac, and Switches in Leiters Ford. She was a volunteer at the Eastern Pulaski Elementary School for many years.

Georjean Pruitt
June 2, 1924 to November 12, 2010
GARLAND, TEXAS - Georjean Fry Pruitt, 86, of Dallas, Texas, originally from Winamac, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, at Walnut Place Nursing Home, Dallas.
She was born June 2, 1924, in Winamac, she was the daugther of the late Russell and Mary Jackson Fry. She married Charles Taylor Pruitt in June 1950, who preceded her in death in November 1981.
She is survived by her daughters, Jackie Beasley and husband Doyle, Amy Golden and husband Robert; son, Charles Christopher Pruitt, all of Texas; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brother, Jack Fry and wife Peggy of Florida; sister, Mary Jane Maimon of Wisconsin; and a host of family and friends.
She is preceded by her brother Bill Fry.
Mrs. Pruitt relocated from Winamac to Dallas in 1948 when she was a flight attendant for American Airlines.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Williams Funeral Directors, Garland, Texas. The funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday (Nov. 16), in Williams Memorial Chapel in Garland.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Thursday (Nov. 18) at Winamac Cemetery, with Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home, Royal Center, handling arrangements.
