This opportunity will never come around again. This will be the nation’s “Semiquincentennial.” That’s a mouthful. Many around the county have already shortened it to “SemiQ.”
Indiana created the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission in 2022. During 2023, the state commission began work on the structure for planning programs and projects for Indiana’s participation in the observance of the country’s 250th anniversary. Its mission is to “commemorate in Indiana the United States of America’s 250th anniversary. The objectives:
- To involve all Hoosiers in the Celebration of America250
- To emphasize the strength of Hoosier ideas, hopes and dreams
- To achieve a 250th Commemoration in which Hoosiers can reflect as a positive achievement at this time in Indiana’s and America’s history.
The commission has reached out to all 92 counties and has asked that each form an America250 Committee.
The Pulaski County Historical Society has been asked to form the local committee. To date, several emails have been sent to organizations that might be interested in becoming involved in local projects. An initial meeting has been set for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Pulaski County Historical Society Museum, 500 S. Monticello St., Winamac (the Carriage House).
All interested parties are invited to attend, or, if unable to attend, to contact the historical society to share your interest.
“As for the projects we could consider, the sky is the limit,” said Kathi Thompson, historical society vice president. “With the diverse minds and talents of our citizens, we can fashion as many events - or as few - as we desire. The time we have to celebrate this auspicious anniversary is ... well, there is no limit. Our nation was formed over many decades in the 1700s. July 4, 1776 is the date we celebrate, but we do not have to limit our activities to that particular date.”
