Mildred L. Clauss

FRANCESVILLE - Mildred L. "Millie" Clauss, 92, of Francesville, passed away Sunday, July 21, at Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital.

She was born July 21, 1927 in Francesville to the late Benjamin and Sarah Kuebler Anliker. She graduated from Wolcott High School in 1945. On Feb. 20, 1946, she married Robert E. Clauss in Wolcott. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Clauss and her husband lived in Wolcott for many years where they farmed, milked cows and raised their family. She was an active member of the Apostolic Christian Church. Over the years, she had taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at the Remington church. She enjoyed Sewing Circle and volunteering at Parkview Haven. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She especially enjoyed "entertaining" the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 26, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville; and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 27, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Francesville. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Kenneth L. Holbrook

February 6, 1951 to July 18, 2019

WINAMAC - Kenneth L. "Kenny" Holbrook, 68, of Winamac, passed away at 9:40 a.m., Thursday, July 18, at Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital.

He was born Feb. 6, 1951 in Indianapolis, to the late Cash and Vivian Tuley Holbrook. He graduated from Winamac High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On Sept. 11, 1976, he married Anne Schmicker at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Winamac. She survives.

Mr. Holbrook was a member of the Winamac VFW Post #1728 and St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac. As owner of Holbrook's Market, he found great joy in interacting with the customers he served. He was a hard worker and took great pride in a job well done. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, gardening and grilling out. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching sports on TV. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially being "Grampa" to Abigail. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m., Sunday, July 21, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, July 22, at the funeral home with Rev. Edward Clark officiating. Burial will be at Winamac Cemetery, Winamac. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services.

Joseph L. Materna

October 14, 1941 to July 14, 2019

NORTH JUDSON - Joseph L. Materna, 77, Winamac, died Sunday, July 14, at Porter Regional Hospital, Valparaiso.

He was born Oct. 14, 1941, in Winamac to the late Joseph and Margaret Lewandowski Materna. He graduated from North Judson High School in 1959.

He is survived by his sister, Shirley Mosher of North Judson; a daughter, Michele (Ryan) Bradley of Knox; five step-grandchildren, Ryan Jr., Josh, Krista, Danny and Nathaniel; a son Eric (Brandy) Materna of North Judson and four grandsons, Daulton, Dylan, Eric Kale and Brady Materna.

Mr. Materna retired from the U. S. Postal Service in 2000, working at the North Judson
location for over 40 years. He was an avid reader, and loved to spend time outdoors, especially gardening. He also enjoyed time with his loved ones. He had a passion for photography and older model cars.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. (CT), Thursday, July 18 at O'Donnell Funeral Home, North Judson. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. (CT), Friday, July 19, at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Clemons officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, North Judson.

Matilda J. Reid

December 11, 1924 to July 13, 2019

WINAMAC - Matilda Johanna "Tillie" Reid, 94, of Winamac, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 13, while sitting in her favorite chair on her back deck watching the cats. She was most likely missing her beloved husband, Donald, who passed away one week prior.

Mrs. Reid was born Dec. 11, 1924 in Jefferson City, MO to the late Anton George and Mary Sybilla Reinkemeyer Rustemeyer. She graduated from Wellston High School in Wellston, MO. She served in many ways to support the World War II effort before meeting her future husband at a USO picnic. The couple were married for 64 years.

Mrs. Reid was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Ladies of Charity. She was also a member of the Homette Home-Ec Club and Krazy Quilters Club. She volunteered at the Pulaski Health Care Center where she led the rosary for over 20 years. She was retired from Eatons. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, playing cards and coloring. She very much enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping. She loved to listen to music and dance. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially the little ones. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be sadly missed.

A scriptural wake service will be at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. Visitation will follow from 4 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. A Ladies of Charity service and Christian Mothers service will be at 8 p.m., followed by the rosary. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 18, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Winamac,  with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery, Winamac.

Dorothy M. Hizer Warfield

August 12, 1924 to July 7, 2019

KEWANNA - Dorothy Margaret McLochlin Hizer Warfield, 94 a lifelong community member of Kewanna and Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. passed away at 11:08 a.m., Sunday, July 7, at Millers Merry Manor in Culver.

Born August 12, 1924 in Grass Creek, she was the daughter of the late John Augustus and Vernice Oliver McLochlin. She was a 1942 graduate and proud cheerleader from Grass Creek High School. On May 8, 1964 she married Raymond E. Warfield. He preceded in death on Sept. 15, 2000.

Survivors include her children, Marcia Ann Hizer Campbell of Miromar Lakes, Fla., Katrina Jane Hizer Smith Beattie (Mark) of Sherman, Ill., John Joseph Hizer of Kewanna and Cresswell A. Hizer (Lynn) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Kim Campbell Powers, Courtney Campbell Bennett, Jason Smith, Sarah Smith, Kyle Hizer, Brittany Hizer Tripathi, Benton Hizer and Cole Hizer; niece, Pat McMillen and nephew, Rob Beery. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Lawrence Hizer Jr.; grandson, Cade Campbell; siblings, John Robert McLochlin, Lowell “Doc” McLochlin and Martha Jane “Babe” McLochlin Beery; her first husband, Lawrence Hizer; and her dearest first cousin, Charles McLochlin.

Mrs. Warfield and her husband Raymond owned and operated R & D Store in Kewanna for 17 years. She also formerly worked in nursing, several factories, the South Bend U.S. Post Office, and was a founding owner of McHiLand Farms, LLC. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. She was also a former Union Township Trustee and EMT. She was an avid Notre Dame fan.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, July 14, at Harrison-Metzger-Rans Funeral Home & Crematory, Kewanna Chapel where there will be a scripture service at 4 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 15, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Kewanna with Father Mike McKinney officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery near Kewanna.

Memorial donations may be made to Kindred Hospice in Rochester.

Donald E. Reid Sr.

May 27,1928 to July 6, 2019

WINAMAC - Donald E. Reid Sr., 91, of Winamac, passed away at 4:48 a.m., Saturday, July 6, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital. Winamac.

He was born May 27, 1928 in East St. Louis, IL to the late Earl and Margaret Clancy Reid. He graduated from St. Henry's Seminary and studied philosophy at Mundelein Seminary. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Sept. 25, 1954, he married Matilda J. Rustemeyer in Wellston, MO. She survives.

Mr. Reid worked as a salesman for the B&O Railroad for 18 years. After the railroad, he went to work at The Braun Corporation and retired in 1993. He was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winamac. He was a 4th Degree member of the Winamac and Monticello Knights of Columbus. He loved to serve the Lord and volunteer in the community. He was on the board of directors for PEAK Community Services for 20 years. He faithfully led the Rosary at Pulaski Health Care Center for over 20 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. He also enjoyed reading and learning about Civil War history. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

A scriptural wake service will be at 3 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. Visitation will follow from 4 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. A Knights of Columbus service will be at 8 p.m., followed by the rosary. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 10, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Winamac, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery, Winamac. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW.

Memorial donations may be made to Gibault School for Boys in Terre Haute.
