A total of 5,909 Pulaski County voters cast ballots. That’s 65.74% of the county’s 8,988 registered voters. Well over half of county voters cast their ballots before election day. Early in-person voters numbered 2,627, and there were 584 who voted by mail. Election day voters totaled 2,698. Also county voters cast 1,877 straight-party votes, 346 Democrat and 1,531 Republican.

In the county commissioner Dist. 1 race, Republican Maurice Loehmer won over Democrat Douglas Denton. Republican Charles Mellon was unopposed for the Dist. 2 contest.

In the county council at-large race all three Republicans, Ken Boswell, Adam Loehmer and Tim Overmyer won out over the fourth candidate, Democrat Renee Calabrese.

Republican Laura Wheeler won her bid for a second term as county auditor. Republican Sue Fox was also re-elected county recorder. Republican Teresa Bryant was unopposed in her run as county treasurer.

Winamac will have a new clerk/treasurer with the election of Kendra Craft who was unopposed in the election. Town council members Judy Heater and Tom Murray were re-elected. They will be joined by newcomer Democrat Larry Weaver.

In the Eastern Pulaski Community School Board election, winners representing the three Monroe/Jefferson Township seats were incumbent Beth Ruff (25.6% of vote), and newcomers Jimmy Terry and Scott Hanson. Rob Zeider was elected, unopposed, to represent Van Buren Township.

West Central School Board candidates were all unopposed. They are incumbents Dennis Gutwein, Jonathan Gutwein and Mandy Sharpe, along with Jacob Tanner.

Local News Briefs

SR 119 to close 3 days for seal coating

PULASKI/WHITE COUNTIES - Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews will be conducting seal coating operations resulting in a road closure on SR 119 beginning on or after Tuesday, May 28. 

SR 119 will be closed between U.S. 35 and State Road 16 for approximately three days. The official detour for this closure will follow SR 16, SR 39, SR 14 and U.S. 35.

County Memorial Day Service May 27

The annual county Memorial Day Service will begin at 11 a.m., Monday (May 27), on the courthouse lawn, Winamac.

The event is organized by the Winamac American Legion Post 71 and VFW Post 1728. Guest speaker will be MacKenzie Ledley. Stan Czech will serve as master of ceremonies.

47th annual Senior Citizen Heath & Resource Fair, picnic May 29

May is Older Americans Month

Pulaski County Human Services will hold its 47th annual Senior Citizen Health and Resource Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday May 29, at the Star City Community Building.

The event also features a senior artisan show, senior picnic (at 11 a.m.) and volunteer recognition program. The theme for 2024 is “Powered by Connection,” which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. 

Parkview plans public Summer Festival series

FRANCESVILLE – A monthly Summer Festival series has been planned by Parkview Haven in Francesville to run June through September at its facility on the north edge of town.

The event will feature a farmers market, plus local vendors, food trucks, arts and crafts and more. The public is welcome to participate.

'Moonlight Over the Tippy' bike ride June 7

The Friends of the Panhandle Pathway are once again sponsoring their annual bike ride. "Moonlight Over the Tippy."

The ride will begin at 7 p.m., Friday, June 7, at the Historic Railroad Freight Depot in downtown Winamac.

Chamber ‘Lunch & Learn’ program May 22

The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will present its first “Lunch & Learn” session of the year on “Fraud Prevention” at 12 noon, Wednesday, May 22, at Celebration Station in downtown Winamac.

The event is co-sponsored by 1st Source Bank. Tickets are $10 if purchased by May 15; or $15 after that date.

State Road 14 to be closed east of Winamac

PULASKI/FULTON COUNTIES - SR 14 will close Wednesday (May 8) between CR 1100W and SR 17 in Fulton County. Approximately 1-mile closures will continue westward sequentially until the scheduled pipe replacements have been completed. Resurfacing of the entire roadway will follow.

While local access will be maintained, through traffic should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow US 35, SR 10 and SR 17.

Warm and wet, but farmers soldier on

EAST LANSING, MI - Despite above-average rainfall, Indiana farmers were still able to make some planting progress last week, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS (National Agriculture Statistics Service), Indiana Field Office.

Topsoil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 94 percent rated adequate or surplus. The average temperature for the week was 66.5 degrees Fahrenheit, 4.1 degrees above normal for the state. The statewide average precipitation was 1.44 inches, 0.38 inches above normal.

Students can now apply for $5K work-based learning scholarships

STATEHOUSE (May 20) – State Reps. Kendell Culp (R-Rensselaer) and Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) encourage high school students who want to pursue work-based learning and credentials to apply for a Career Scholarship Account.

Culp said Hoosier students in grades 10-12 at a state accredited public or private school can receive up to a $5,000 state-funded scholarship to pursue apprenticeships, applied learning experiences, work-based learning and credentials attainment. About 2,000 spots are available for the 2024-25 school year and students may  apply for a Career Scholarship Account until the Oct. 1 deadline.

Young praises Senate passage of FAA reauthorization focused on improving safety, advancing technology

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, praised Senate passage of the bipartisan Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2024.

The legislation, which passed the Senate 88-4 Thursday (May 9), reauthorizes the FAA for five years. The bill includes several provisions to strengthen aviation safety and oversight at the FAA, address air traffic controller shortages, require airlines to seat families together, and support the next generation of aviation technology innovations.

Amazon Web Services plans to invest $11B to create a new data center campus in Northern Indiana

Announcement marks the largest planned capital investment in state history

NEW CARLISLE (April 25) – Gov. Eric Holcomb today announced that Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com. Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), plans to invest $11 billion to build a data center campus in north central Indiana and create at least 1,000 new jobs.

This planned investment marks the largest capital investment announcement in Indiana’s history.

Indiana COVID-19 News

May 8: Indiana reports COVID cases down in 7-day average, at 53

INDIANAPOLIS (May 8) – The Indiana Department of Health reported Wednesday that the state’s 7-day average COVID-19 count stood at 53 cases for the period of April 28 to May 4. That number is down six cases from the previous revised count. The total state COVID deaths for the week was zero. Indiana's all-time COVID deaths total 26,519.

Pulaski County reported no new cases and no deaths to IDH in the latest seven-day report. The county's all-time pandemic numbers are 3,725 (reported) COVID cases and 95 deaths.

According to the CDC, respiratory illness activity is now minimal in Indiana (reported May 3), as well as for neighboring states of Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. Based on visits to emergency departments, illness trends in the Pulaski County area show all respiratory illnesses (COVID, influenza, RSV) are at low levels (less than 1%).

Bonds sold for courthouse renovation project

Meridian Street to partially close for construction

The bond sale for the financing of the Pulaski County Courthouse renovation project was conducted Thursday (May 16) by Baker Tilly, the county’s accounting and financial advising firm.

Details remain to be completed, and closing is expected in early June. The successful buyer was R.W. Baird & Co., an investment firm headquartered in Milwaukee.

County police log 137 calls for service May 10-17

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s office has released its May 10-17 police blotter report. During the seven-day period, deputies logged 137 calls for service. 

West Central HS holds 2024 senior awards program

FRANCESVILLE - West Central High School held its annual Senior Awards program Monday evening (May 13). Seniors were recognized for various academic and athletic awards, honor roll, and scholarships.

Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2024 will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 26, at the school gymnasium.

2 Indiana banks win statewide award for ‘Commitment to Community’

INDIANAPOLIS (May 14) – Alliance Bank, Francesville, and Horizon Bank, Michigan City, have been honored with the Indiana Bankers Association C2C (Commitment to Community) Awards for outstanding community service performed during 2023.

West Central School Board reviews next facilities updates

FRANCESVILLE - The West Central School Board reviewed  a planned improvements listing that will be undertaken in the next bond project at its monthly meeting May 2.

Discussion followed with Superintendent Dr. Cathy Rowe about the inclusion of a high school football bleacher replacement project, and the elementary and middle/high school cafeteria areas including floor finishes.

4C Health implements market-leading wage increase for licensed Indiana therapists

ROCHESTER - 4C Health has announced it is leading the way in the state by implementing industry- and market-leading wages for licensed clinical social workers, licensed mental health counselors, and licensed marriage/family therapists under their four-day/32-hour work week model.

4C Health began as Four County Comprehensive Mental Health Center in 1975. It has served as the designated community mental health center for Cass, Miami, Fulton, and Pulaski counties since that time.

CDC reports $9.4 million county surplus
The news was upbeat and the speakers were animated at the annual Pulaski County Economic Development Summit Tuesday (April 23) in Winamac. The event is hosted by the Pulaski County Community Development Commission.

CDC executive director Nathan Origer had good news to report about county finances, while keynote speaker John Eric Bry, an award-winning leader in the Main Street America program, enthusiastically outlined usable tips for building dynamic communities.
