Grant H. Hero
February 9, 1950 to June 18, 2024
WINAMAC - Grant Henry Hero, 74, of Monterey, passed away Tuesday, June 18, at Northwest Health Hospital in La Porte.
He was born Feb. 9, 1950 in Winamac, to the late Chester and Adeline [Brook] Hero. On Nov. 16, 1974, he married JoAnn Paula Walters in Monterey. She survives.
He is also survived by: Jayme Earl Hero, Streamwood, IL, Son Crystal LeAnn Lehman, Goshen, Daughter Leisel LeAnn Lehman, Granddaughter Joan Shidler, Temple, TX, Sister Albert Hero, Sebring, FL, Brother Ronald Hero, Winamac, Brother Several Nieces and Nephews
Preceded in death by: Virgil Hero, Brother
Mr. Hero worked at Eaton Controls until they closed, and retired from BraunAbility in 2013. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, arrowhead hunting, and caring for the birds. Most of all, he loved his family very much and will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, June 21, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. (Friday), at the funeral home with Rev. Dennis Faker officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Monterey.

Lois M. Lau
November 14, 1943 to June 10, 2024
WINAMAC - Lois Mae Lau, 80, of Winamac, passed away Monday, June 10, at Hickory Creek in Winamac.

She was born Nov. 14, 1943 in Winamac to the late Louis and Goldie [Jenkins] Lau.
She is survived by several nephews and their families, as well as numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Harry (Gertie) Lau, Mary Lou (Joseph) Malia, and Anna Belle (Jim) Posthuma; and a niece Barbara Posthuma.
Ms. Lau made many friends during the years she worked at Schultz Bros. Dime Store, and then at Coast-to-Coast Hardware which later became Ace Hardware. She was a beloved member of Bethel Bible Church. She was well-known for her greeting card ministry and sharing Amish-baked goods with others. She enjoyed her many pet dogs and cats, doing dot-to-dot pictures, and watching TV.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., Monday, June 17, at Bethel Bible Church in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., (Monday), at the church with Pastor Matt Dodd officiating. Private burial will be at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac.

Joseph V. Milo
April 25, 1957 to June 10, 2024
ROYAL CENTER - Joseph Victor Milo, 67, Star City, passed away Monday, June 10, at Chase Center in Logansport.

He was born April 25, 1957, the son of the late Ed and Roxanne Milo. He was a 1975 graduate of Culver High School and attended Purdue University, where he discovered a love of writing.
Survivors include his brother Ed (Mary Ann) Milo, North Judson; sister Brenda (Craig) Gilman; and nephews Josh and Caleb Gilman, all of Star City; nieces Andrea (Robert) Davis, Winamac, and Melissa (Troy) Ledman, Delphi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Victor and Ethel Clements and Michael and Pauline Milo; and an infant brother Brian Rand Milo.
Mr. Milo supervised a cleaning crew at Wabash Center in Lafayette, where he was greatly loved and admired for the tremendous amount of care, patience and enthusiasm he showed his crew. He was a talented musician, self-taught on lead guitar, with an impressive knack for playing a variety of instruments by ear. He will be remembered for his warm smile, the joy he brought to every family gathering, his quick-witted sense of humor and the love and kindness he showed to everyone he knew. He will be sadly missed by his friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

WINAMAC - Lois McKinley, 89, of South Bend (formerly of Winamac) passed away early morning Wednesday, June 5, at the Center for Hospice Care - Ernestine Raclin House in Mishawaka.
She was born Dec. 11, 1934, in Winamac to the late Lon and Flo [Lebo] McKinley. She attended school in Winamac and graduated with the Winamac High School class of 1952. She attended St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Lafayette, for a period of time.
She is survived by: Lorna (Smed) Miller, Winamac, Daughter Lee Hoover, Arden, DE, Daughter Allen (Cindy Cox) Hoover, Dayton, Son Andy Hoover, South Bend, Son Ron Hoover, South Bend, Son Carol (Ricky Sr.) Kline, Mishawaka, Daughter Grandchildren: Dustin (Jeannie Button) Hoover, Brandi (Nick) Silver, Nathan Gonzalez, Tana Hoover, Nick (Cathy Xiong) Hoover, Chris Hoover, Sarah Hoover, Ricky (Sarah) Kline Jr., Cory (Autumn Howell) Kline, and Stefanie (Jake) Gawne. Step-Grandchildren: Brian Triesler and Danny Triesler; and someone she considered a Bonus-Grandchild: Adam Snider. During the time she lived in Winamac, Ms. McKinley served as Worthy Advisor for the Rainbow Girls. She was a 50-year member of the Tippecanoe Chapter #96 OES. After moving to South Bend, she held a job in the security department at the former Robertson’s Department Store downtown. She then became a real estate agent and really enjoyed helping families find the perfect home. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the Relief Society. She loved coming to Winamac in August for the McKinley Cousins Reunion, and especially enjoyed connecting with family members she rarely got to see. She had made the reunion last year and was looking forward to it this August. Her grandkids and great-grandkids brightened her days. She will be dearly missed by all those who loved her.

Marney N. Gust

WINAMAC - Marney N. “June” Gust, 90, of Winamac passed away Saturday, June 1, at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne.
He was born May 6, 1934 in Michigan City, to the late Marney W. and Mary E. [Radley] Gust. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59.

Mr. Gust was retired from the Michigan City Water Department where he worked many years as a meter repairman. He was fondly known as “June” to his close friends and family, a nickname that began as “Junior.” He enjoyed gardening, tinkering and living on the Tippecanoe River. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Mr. Gust requested to be an organ donor and that no services be held. Private burial will be at Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham, IL.

Joe E Markley
September 9, 1964 to May 31, 2024
WINAMAC - Joe E Markley, 59, of Winamac passed away at 5:20 p.m., Friday, May 31, at his home.
Born Sept. 9, 1964, he was the son of Donald and Margaret (Holland) Markley.
Survivors include his son Zach (Shannon) Markley of Michigan, brother Larry Markley of Peru and sister Melissa (Josh) Behny of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Bart Thompson.
Mr. Markley was a skilled welder and worked in various industries throughout his life. During his free time, he enjoyed deer hunting, arrowhead hunting, riding his motorcycle, and was an avid collector of Jim Beam memorabilia.
A celebration of life gathering will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 8, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac.

Howard W. Cords
April 4, 1929 to May 30, 2024
MEDARYVILLE - Howard William Cords, 95, of Medaryville, passed away Thursday, May 30, at White Oak Health Campus in Monticello.
He was born in the family home near Francesville, on April 4, 1929 to the late William and Minnie [Kruger] Cords. He graduated from Medaryville High School in 1947. On June 29, 1968, he married Judith L. “Judy” Selmer, at St. John United Church of Christ near Medaryville. She survives.

As a young boy, Mr. Cords helped his dad with the farming and continued farming for his lifetime, retiring in 2021. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951-52 before being honorably discharged. He was honored to receive a Quilt of Valor in 2017. He was a lifelong member of St. James Salem United Church of Christ near Francesville. He bowled on several leagues and enjoyed going fox hunting with the guys. He enjoyed watching Purdue men’s basketball games on TV, playing a lot of Solitaire on the computer, and working in the shop. Howard and Judy enjoyed square dancing and going on bus tours as well as traveling to Arizona and Minnesota to see family. He was a loving husband, proud dad, and adoring grandpa. He delighted in all of their accomplishments and enjoyed attending all of their activities. Spending time with his family was a precious thing to do, and he dearly loved them all. He will be missed by many.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 5, at St. James Salem United Church of Christ, Francesville with Pastor Bill McNabney officiating. Burial will be at St. James Salem Cemetery, Francesville. The American Legion will conduct military graveside services.
Memorial donations may be made to St. James Salem United Church of Christ or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
