Dean D. Lowry

December 20, 1944 to December 21, 2012

FRANCESVILLE - Dean D. Lowry, 68, of Francesville, passed away at 3:20 a.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at IU Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1944 in Francesville, to the late Donald H. and Alice Catherine Bayless Lowry. He married Carol E. Johns on July 17, 1966 in Monon. She survives.

Preceded in death by:
Two Brothers, Kenneth and James Lowry;
Three Infant Sisters.

Mr. Lowry was a member of the Francesville First Christian Church where he has served as chairman of the church elders, and served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, small group member and on the missions committee. He was also a member of the West Central School Board since 1986. He had a true interest in the well-being of the students. He was a board member of the Purdue Christian Campus House. He was the former president of the Carroll-White REMC Board where he had served for 25 years. He was a former member of the Pulaski County 4-H Board and the Pulaski County Pork Producers. He was a lifetime farmer and avid golfer. He enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, riding his motorcycle and mowing the roadsides. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday (Dec. 24), at Francesville First Christian Church, Francesville, with Pastor James Ketchen officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville. Military graveside services will be conducted.

Memorial donations may be given to Francesville First Christian Church Building Fund or West Central Schools Educational Foundation, Inc.

Leisha K. Davis

October 1, 1961 to December 19, 2012

FRANCESVILLE - Leisha K. Davis, 51, of Francesville, passed away at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 1, 1961 in Salem.

Survivors include two daughters: Angela Davis, Monticello, and Samantha Davis, Francesville; five grandchidren: Machaela Davis, Ethan Koebcke, Alexis Koebcke, Jaden Erb and Braden Erb; one brother: Barry Baker, Kentland; two sisters: Cathy (Danne) Cawby, Reno, NV and Barbara Harris, Monticello.

She was preceded in death by her parents Pallas Baker and Georgia Hammack Day.

Mrs. Davis graduated from West Central High School in 1979. She owned and operated the Old Corral in Francesville for many years. She was a member of the Medaryville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and playing Cribbage. She loved her family very much, especially her grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m., Saturday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. The funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. (Saturday, Dec. 22), at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Gutwein officiating. Burial will be in Central Barren Cemetery, Central Barren, IN.

Memorial donations may be given to Medaryville American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. 

John E. Schiuszie

August 5, 1931 to December 18, 2012

WINAMAC -  John Edward Schiuszie, 81, Rochester, formerly of Winamac, passed away at 4 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 5, 1931, in Chicago, to the John and Pauline Smeja Schiuszie. He married Velma M. Carter on Sept. 16, 1961, in Chicago. She survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Vivian (Mike) Long, Logansport, Leisa (Phillip) Watterson, West Lafayette, Cynthia (Earl) Burdine, Battleground, and Venell (Josh) Lett, Rochester; two sons, Douglas (Lanie ) Brigman, Egg Harbor, WI, and Chris (Linda) Schiuszi, Lafayette; 18 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a grandson Nathan Robert Watterson, a great grandson Kyle Downing, and two sisters, Frieda Heller and Eleanor Jarawoski.

Mr. Schiuszie spent his early years in the Chicago area and had resided in Mosheim, TN, for several years. He moved to Winamac in 1976 and lived here until moving to Rochester in 2006. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW Posts in Winamac and Rochester, and the American Legion in Medaryville. He was the former owner of Zebon Concrete and was the contractor who built the Grotto at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Winamac, and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pulaski.

No visitation or services will be held. Burial will be in Winamac Cemetery, Winamac.

Karen L. Lawson

September 25, 1938 to December 15, 2012

WINAMAC - Karen L. Lawson, 74, of Monticello, formerly of Winamac, died at 4:44 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15, at St. Elizabeth Hospital East in Lafayette.

She was born Sept. 25, 1938, in Winamac, to the late Walter Rollo and Alice Louise Cramer Riffil. She married JR Lawson on Sept. 27, 1984, in Winamac. He survives.

She was an active member of the American Registered Radiologic Technologist Association Registery and American Society of Radiologic Technologist. She enjoyed taking care of her patients and had a special love for helping people. Her favorite pasttimes were watching birds and spending time with her family. She was an avid Indiana University basketball fan and rarely missed a game. She was a wonderful loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Private family visitation will be Thursday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A private family graveside service will follow (Thursday, Dec. 20), at McKinley Memorial Gardens, Winamac, with Pastor Jim Howard officiating. Burial will be in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac

Memorial donations may be given to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Beverly Jean Sobczak

September 6, 1929 to December 14, 2012

WINAMAC - Beverly Jean Sobczak, 83, of Plymouth, formerly of Winamac, passed away at 2:01 a.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at Miller's Merry Manor, Plymouth.

She was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Winamac, to the late Paul and Irene James Somers. She married Ernest S. Sobczak on Jan. 28, 1950, in Knox. He passed away  Feb. 21, 1981.

Mrs. Sobczak was a member of the VFW Post #1728 Auxillary, and Moss Creek Country Club. She was retired from Torin Manufacturing, Rochester. She enjoyed golfing, being with her friends, and cooking. n enjoyed the company of her dog Casey.

Friends may call after 4 p.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m., (Tuesday, Dec. 18), at the funeral home  with Pastor Rick Abbott officiating. Burial will be in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac, at a later date.

Memorial donations may be given to the family.

Lester L. Wilson

April 11, 1916 to December 14, 2012

WINAMAC - Lester L. Wilson, 96, of Winamac, passed away at 12:05 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at his residence.

Born on April 11, 1916 in Helix, Oregon, his natural parents were Delbert and Marie Wilson, of Umatilla County, Oregon. After the death of his mother at the age of four, he was raised by his Aunt Carrie and Uncle Fred Koebcke of Francesville. He married Lucille L. Werner of Francesville on Nov. 26, 1943. She survives.

He was preceded in death by his natural parents, Delbert and Marie Wilson, and his aunt and uncle, Fred and Carrie Koebcke.

Mr. Wilson attended the University of Arizona, Tucson and received his law degree from Indiana University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. His law study was interrupted with 3-1/2 years of naval service on the USS Earle, a World War II convoy escort destroyer. While on leave in New York City in November 1943, Mr. Wilson married his wife.

He attended St.Luke Lutheran Church in Winamac. Well known for his wit and humor, he brought many smiles to Winamac residents and store owners during his nearly 40 years of law practice. He will be dearly missed by so many who loved him.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday,  at Frain Mortuary, Winamac; and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday (Dec. 20), at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Winamac, with Pastor Tom Woodley officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville. Military graveside services will be conducted. 

Memorial donations may be given to: St. Luke Lutheran Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice. 

Frank O. Cannon

July 25, 1926 to December 9, 2012

WINAMAC - Frank O. Cannon Jr., 86, of Winamac, died at 11:05 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, at IU-Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born July 25, 1926, in Jacksonville, IL, to the late Frank O. and Lola Johnson Cannon Sr. He married Patricia Chapman on June 5, 1951, in Jacksonville, IL. She survives.

Mr. Cannon graduated from Routt High School in Jacksonville, IL, and Illinois College at Jacksonville. He was a member of Phi Alpha Fraterity. Very active in Democrat politics in his youth, he served as president of the Illinois Young Democrats. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been in combat in Europe.

Mr. Cannon had been a resident of Winamac since 1961. He was employed with Pfizer Pharmaceutals for 20 years in sales. He also had been employed as a counselor with the Indiana Department of Corrections until his retirement 16 years ago. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus, both of Winamac. He was a true fan and supporter of the University of Notre Dame football and basketball teams. He was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman, and bird watcher. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
