Phyllis J. Nufer

November 19, 1931 to July 14, 2017

WINAMAC - Phyllis J. Nufer , 85, of Winamac, passed away at 12:46 a.m., Friday, July 14, at Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac.

She was born Nov. 19, 1931 in Star City, to the late Clinton and Esther Schultz Drach. On Feb. 9, 1957 she married Joseph R. Nufer. He passed away March 4, 2004.

She is survived by:

Mrs. Nufer was a homemaker. She had worked in the dietary department of Pulaski Memorial Hospital. She had also worked as a cleaner at the former Winamac Cleaning and Laundry. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and had been active in the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed automobile racing and trips to Las Vegas. She also enjoyed playing cards.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, July 17, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A scriptural wake service will be at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a rosary service. The funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Winamac, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. Burial will be at St. Peters Cemetery, Winamac.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac.

Ruth A. Buikema

November 8, 1941 to July 6, 2017

NORTH JUDSON - Ruth A. Buikema Age 75 of Francesville, passed away July 6.

She was born Nov. 8, 1941 to Henry and Frances (Douglas) Buikema in Allegan, Mich.

She is survived by one sister, Carol Roe, of Winamac.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 8 at Highland Cemetery, North Judson.

O'Donnell Funeral Home, North Judson, is in charge of arrangements.

Derrick W. Myers

July 23, 1970 to July 7, 2017

FRANCESVILLE - Derrick W. Myers, 46, of Lafayette, passed away at 12:52 a.m., Friday, July 7, at St. Elizabeth East Hospital, Lafayette.

He was born July 23, 1970 in Winamac, to Donald W. and Mary M. Eads Myers.

Mr. Myers was a 1990 graduate of West Central High School. He enjoyed driving semi and was an avid NASCAR and Jimmy Johnson fan. He was also a collector of Andy Griffith memorabilia. He was a loving son, father, and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 9, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 10, at the funeral home with Rev. Tom Dewlen officiating. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Holly D. Sale

July 12, 1956 to June 30, 2017

HUNTINGTON - Holly Diane Sale, 60, of Huntington, died at 5:11 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Parkview Regional Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born July 12, 1956 in Logansport, the daughter of James T. and Claire L. (Mars) Connolly. She and Mark Sale were married on Sept. 3, 1983 in Winamac.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Mark of Huntington, a sister, Vicki (Jon) Canfield of Fort Wayne, and a brother, Dane (Lori) Connolly of Omaha, Neb. Also surviving are her mother-in-law, Lela Sale of Huntington, five nieces, and two nephews.

Her parents and her father-in-law, Robert Sale, precede her in death.

Mrs. Sale graduated from Winamac Community High School in 1974; she attended Purdue University for two years and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in physical therapy. In 1989, she earned a master of health science degree in physical therapy from the University of Indianapolis. She started her physical therapy career at Huntington Memorial Hospital in June of 1978, (now Parkview Huntington Hospital), recently completing 39 years. She started as a staff physical therapist, then as director of rehabilitation services, and currently was director of Rehabilitation and Wellness, Physicians Specialty Clinic, and Service Excellence/Patient Experience for the past several years. She had a passion for the patient experience and service excellence, and a special interest in health and wellness and providing for the health care needs of the community.

Mrs. Sale was an active member of Salamonie Church of the Brethren, where she served as choir director, as she loved music and singing. She completed Huntington County Leadership Academy class in 2000. She was currently serving as president of the Huntington County Safety Council, secretary for the Parkview Huntington Boys and Girls Club, president of Huntington University Foundation, Huntington University Board of Trustees, board member with Pathfinder Services, and past board member of United Way and Red Cross. During her membership in Tri Kappa, Chi Chapter of Huntington, she held many offices including past president. She loved watching basketball and football, and was an avid Huntington University and Purdue fan. She enjoyed exercising, reading, and knitting. She loved spending time with family and friends, and loved traveling to the mountains or walking on the beach. She dearly loved her “Marcus Welby.” Romans 8:28 and Psalm 46, were Scriptures she lived by, and gave her comfort.

Visitation will be from 2 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at Salamonie Church of the Brethren, 2662 West 600 South, Huntington, with Dr. Sherilyn Emberton officiating. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service. Private burial will be at a later time.

John J. Buyer

February 24,1928 to June 27, 2017

MONTICELLO - John J. Buyer, D.D.S., 89, of Monticello, passed away at 7 p.m., Monday, June 27,  at Forum at the Crossing, Indianapolis, surrounded by his family.

He was born Feb. 24, 1928 in Francesville, to the late Dr. CC and Jennie Colbo Buyer. He married Jean Martschink at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Dec. 27, 1950 in Charleston, S.C.

Survivors include: Karen Buyer (Burkhardt) DiNardo, B.S.,M.S. (Tom) of Kokomo, Diane Buyer, D.D.S. (Timothy Yale) of Indianapolis, John J Buyer Jr., D.D.S., M.P.H., M.S. (Col. USA DC ret.) (Christine) of Blacksburg, Va., and Congressman Steve Buyer (Col. USAR ret.) (Joni) of Carmel; grandchildren, Colleen Buyer, Ryan Buyer (Ashlyn), Joseph Buyer (Molly), Jeremy Buyer (Lauren) and Matthew Buyer; five great-grandchildren: Kaden, Braxton, Carly, Jameson and Harper; and all the smallmouth bass he released in the Tippy.

His wife Jean predeceased him in July 2015, as well as Toby Burkhardt (son-in-law).

Dr. Buyer graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1946 and was Midwest Prep Conference Football All Star Team. He was a 1950 graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he was Band Company Commander, member of the Jr. Sword Drill and Bulldog Orchestra Conductor. He helped found “The Buyer Family Top Leadership Scholarship” which helps and rewards cadet leaders at The Citadel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, then returned to school graduating in 1957 from I.U. School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry for 50 years in Francesville, retiring in 2008. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Indiana Dental Association and the West Central Dental Society.

Dr. Buyer served as Salem Township Trustee and on the Pulaski County School Board during school reorganization in Indiana. He gave back to his hometown in many projects. He was president of the first Francesville Fall Festival, which celebrated building the fire station without government money. As president of the Lions Club, all Francesville houses were assigned numbers. He built tennis courts in the park and with his wife, Jean, plotted the new addition to the Roseland Cemetery. They also founded a Junior Achievement Company which taught business to the youth of Francesville. He taught Sunday school, sponsored MYF and sang in the choir at the United Methodist Church.

Dr. Buyer dedicated his life to improving the lives of veterans and the next generation. He served as Commander of the American Legion 2nd District in 1996-97 and served 10 years on the American Legion National Legislative Council. He was Chaplain of the American Legion Post #228. As Chef de Gare of 40&8 Voiture 211, he promoted and awarded nursing scholarships. He was a 32-degree Mason of Winamac Lodge #25 and member of the Orak Shrine. He was an ardent Tippecanoe River fisherman. He loved trees and nature and planted thousands of trees locally and worldwide. He is responsible for sending tulip poplar trees to honor every Indiana soldier who died in action and wounded to Seoul, South Korea when commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Korean Conflict Ceasefire. He is also responsible for cherry and apple orchards being planted on the grounds of orphanages in Ukraine.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 1, with a "Doc’s Gone Fishing" celebration reception following at Miller - Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello. Full military rites will be conducted at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville at 2 p.m.

Patricia A. Cannon

July 24, 1932 to June 18, 2017

WINAMAC - Patricia A. Cannon 84, of Winamac, died at 11:53 a.m., Sunday, June 18, at her home.

She was born July 24, 1932 in Strawberry Point, Iowa to the late Harold and Marcella Forey Chapman. She married Frank O. Cannon Jr. on June 5, 1951 in Jacksonville, IL. He died Dec. 9, 2012.

Mrs. Cannon attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski. She had worked as an office manager at Heinsen Family Practice in Winamac. She was an avid antique collector and loved fishing.

A private graveside service will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery South, Pulaski.

Memorial donations may be given to the Audubon Society.
