Leroy G. Ash
May 18, 1943 to February 2, 2019
MUNCIE - Leroy George Ash, 75, (formerly of Winamac) passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, at home with his wife and children at his side.
He was born May 18, 1943, the son of the late Arthur Pete and Catherine Wandrey Ash.
He is survived by his wife, Jill Ash; his brother, John (Terry) Ash; his children, Katie, Hannah, Haley and Olivia Johnson, Brook (Crystal) Ash, Natalie Forte, Carla (Matt) Pratt, and Justin (Johanna) Ash; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by co-presidents of the R.O.M.E.O Club, Randy Acres and Bob Llewellyn; and all of his pets named Pete.
In his youth, Mr. Ash was a member of the Marine Corps Band, and he played Taps at the funeral for the first fallen officer in Vietnam. Upon his return to Indiana, he began a 25-year career at Wilson Foods, then served as a corrections officer for Logansport’s juvenile detention center until he retired in 2007. He was a talented musician, a skill he put to use as a trumpet player in several bands and as a vocalist for the San Quentin Seven. There wasn’t a song on the radio he couldn’t improve by singing along or ham-boning to, or a pie he wouldn’t make sure you tried before you could leave the house.
Mr. Ash is remembered for his easygoing nature and quick-witted sense of humor that brightened the lives of those around him and endured even in his most difficult times. He was the eye of the storm in a family that was always moving; if you asked him, he’d tell you it was like being in the middle of a flock of sparrows. Fair winds and following seas to a loving man, whose smile lit up a room even if he hated to be told so.
Arrangements entrusted to Parson Mortuary, Muncie.
