Herbert Newman Sr.

November 20, 1929 to December 24, 2014

CULVER - Herbert Newman Sr., 85, of Culver died Wednesday, Dec. 24, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

Herb was born Nov. 20, 1929 to John Allen and May (Warmbrod) Newma, one of six children. He married Norma (Good) Newman on Nov. 19, 1955. She preceded him in death in January 1994.

He is survived by sons John (Jeanne) of Winamac, Herbert Jr. (Janet) of Culver, Arthur (Melissa) of Winamac;
daughters Barbara (Warren) Penrod of Culver, Geri of Culver, Mary of Bennington, daughter-in-law Marilyn
(Edward) of Star City; 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; sister Helen Samuelson of Plymouth, brother-in-law Norman Good of Fishers, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son Edward, grandson Douglas, brothers Charles, Jesse, J Allen, and sister Lovina Wesson.

Mr. Newman worked on the family-owned dairy farm in Culver. He served in the Army in the post-World War II occupation of Germany and was involved in the atomic bomb testing in Nevada. He acted as the quartermaster of the Finney-Shilling VFW Post 6919 and was a member of Collins Tasch American Legion in Monterey and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus. During his early retirement, he was a frequent driver for the Culver-Union Township EMS.
Mr. Newman considered his greatest accomplishments to be raising seven children who grew up to be good people, volunteering in the community; and remaining married for 38 years. He loved and adored his family. He did not consider any episode in his life a disappointment and cited his kids and grandkids as the most important things in his life. When asked if there was anything he wanted to change in his life, he said no, because he had a complete satisfaction of his life. He spent most of his later years with family, friends and his beloved dogs.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 29, at the Odom Funeral Home. Father Jeff Largent will officiate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church, Culver. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Culver-Union Township EMS or the Marshall County Community
Foundation-Zion Cemetery Trust.
