Max L. Russell

May 10, 1918 to June 16, 2012

ROYAL CENTER - Max L. Russell, 94, of Royal Center passed away at 12:05 a.m., Saturday, June 16, at Pulaski Healthcare Center in Winamac.

Born on May 10, 1918 in Star City, he was the son of the late Elihu and Florence (Vangundy) Russell. On Aug. 13, 1939 he married Emma Jean Warner. She preceded him in death on July 29, 2011.

Survivors include his children, Darwin “Doc” Russell and wife Jo of Winamac, Sandy Haselby and husband Wayne of Royal Center, Judy Rogers and husband Phil of Royal Center, Connie Frame and husband Stan of Royal Center, Ron Russell and wife Linda of Royal Center and Don Russell and wife Karol of Royal Center; brother, Dale Russell of Frankfort and sister Julia Baker of Logansport. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren with one on the way, 1 great great grandson with one on the way and 2 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Galen Russell and Delos Russell and sisters, Alice Smith and Lois Davis.

Mr. Russell was a 1936 Star City High School graduate. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a Purple Heart Recipient. He was formerly employed at Logan Machine for 17 years and he retired in 1995 from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier after 36 years. He was a member of Royal Center United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 60, V.F.W. #3790 and the National Rural Letter Carrier’s Association. He enjoyed meeting his friends at McDonald’s in Winamac.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, Royal Center Chapel. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday (June 19), at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Drane officiating. Burial with military rites will be performed at Star City West Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Royal Center United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
