James R. Ortman

September 12, 1949 to January 23, 2012

WINAMAC - James R. Ortman, 62, of Winamac, passed away at 5:45 p.m., Monday, Jan. 23, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

He was born Sept. 12, 1949, in Lafayette. He came to Winamac in 1962 when he was adopted by George and Ann Ortman. He married Mary A. Doll on Sept. 7, 1974 at St. James Church, Francesville. She survives.

Together Mr. Ortman and his wife owned and operated Ortman Meat Processing in Winamac for 23 years. They also owned Prairie Moon Orchard in Francesville. He enjoyed the catering business, especially spending time in the food trailer with his sons-in-law. He was a member of the Indiana Meat Packers Assocation. He served as a director and chairman of the Cured Meat Show. He won many awards for his products.

He loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m., Thursday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday (Jan. 27), at the funeral home with Pastor Mike VanHeyningen and Rev. Judith Doll officiating. Burial will be in St. James-Salem Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorial donations may be given to the family to establish a scholarship in memory of Mr. Ortman.
