A National Garden Clubs 'Member of Honor' Award is presented to Wanda Zahrt (R) of the Iris-Elm Garden Club. |
The National Garden Clubs is one of the nation’s largest volunteer organizations and takes pride in honoring the many hours of volunteer work it takes to ensure the promotion and interest in horticulture education, landscaping, floral design, and environmental concerns. To recognize club members who go above and beyond the call of duty, the National Garden Clubs award up to eight Member of Honor recipients each year. These special volunteers make outstanding contributions to club and community during a five-year period in one or more of the following areas: civic development, horticulture therapy, youth activities, conversation, landscape design, horticulture, or floral design.
The Iris Elm Garden Club, organized in 1930, is a member of the Garden Club of Indiana, Inc. (TGCI), which is the parent organization to 54 clubs and 1,300 members in Indiana. TCGI is one of eight member states of the Central Region of the National Garden Clubs, which is home to hundreds of clubs and thousands of members across America.
Mrs. Zahrt’s recognition puts the Iris Elm Garden Club on the national map. Over the past five years, she has demonstrated commitment and dedication not only to the Iris Elm Garden Club, but the state and national organizations as well. She was selected as the Central Region’s recipient out of members from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Missouri. St. Louis in the latter state is the headquarters of the National Garden Clubs.
Over the past five years, Zahrt has dedicated hundreds of hours to club activities, furthering horticultural education for adults and youth, and “plain ‘ole digging in the dirt” for the beautification of the community and civic development. Three large-scale projects precipitated her selection as a Member of Honor: Indiana Garden Club’s 90th Anniversary Reel, “The Colors of Hope,” and the multi-phase Blue Star Memorial at the Winamac Freight Depot.
“Lastly, Wanda’s service to club and community must not be overlooked, as she truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism and promotes National Garden Club values,” reported a club spokesperson. “She has dedicated countless hours of service to the Iris Elm Garden Club, conducting business, promoting club membership, and coordinating educational programs for club members and guests. The Iris Elm Garden Club is delighted that Wanda has received this prestigious award and are so proud to call her a member.”
The Iris Elm Garden Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. For more information about the club or how to join, please contact David Zahrt, president This email address is being protected from spambots.
