The 2024 high school summer school program will run mornings (8 a.m. to 12 noon) from Thursday, May 30 to Friday, June 14. The content will be only credit recovery with in-person instruction with teachers tutoring in contact areas.
The middle school/elementary summer school dates will be July 24 through Aug. 2 (8:30 to 11 a.m.). Content will be for Kindergarten, third grade and middle school. Transportation will be offered with strategic stops throughout the district.
The breakdown for items to be covered by the PACE Grant (Pulaski Alliance for Community Education) is as follows:
- Accelerated Reader Renewal Licensures = $3,724
- Accelerated Reader Prizes for students who achieve personal reading goals = $300
- Birthday Books Scholastic Books $6 x 500 Students = $3,000
- Literacy Additions of 180 new books for lunchtime read-alouds. After being read, the books will be added to the school library collection = $15 x180 = $2,700
- Preschool Teacher portion of salary = $5,000
In other business, the board approved an expenditure of $35,496 for the middle school science curriculum. The cost breakdown is $23.20 per student.
Also under financial items, the board approved claims, transfers, the fund report, the school corporation summary, as well as a cafeteria transfer for February and grant cleanups. Also addressed were the Medicaid to Education Fund for March, multi-year contracts and a summary of education expenditures.
Personnel Items
The school board approved the recommendation to appoint Lauren Fredel as volunteer assistant pole vault coach.
Approval was given for the retirements of middle/high school agriculture teacher Tammy Halleck and elementary school teacher Ann Wilcox.
The board accepted the resignation of middle school special education teacher Bernard White, who also served as eighth-grade boys basketball coach.
Approval was given to the transfer request from Rebecca Clark to preschool/afternoon library.
A maternity leave request was granted to Emily Valencia (2024-25 year).
The board voted to approve the request to post the following positions:
- Instructional assistant (part-time)
- Welding - certified position
- Pre-Healthcare - certified position
Action Items
The school board accepted the following donations:
- Larry Rausch - $200 special needs preschool
- Lightstream - eclipse glasses for district
- Betty L Knarr Oberg gift - $10,000 (earmarked for middle/high school library)
- Jim Dobson Memorial Fund - $1,000 recurring grant to support music programs at WCHS
The board granted permission to advertise RFP for purchasing Chromebooks.
Approval was given for a three-year subscription for the Visitor Management System.
