SAWs staff met Thursday (Feb. 9) with BraunAbility and the Community Foundation of Pulaski County in Winamac to discuss building plans and accessibility for residents of Pulaski County. BraunAbility shares its available space with volunteers who prefabricate the wooden ramps on site, to be assembled at clients’ homes. SAWs toured the BraunAbility facility and met with accessibility advocates. BraunAbility has pledged to build several more ramps with SAWs in the next year for residents.
“Together, SAWs, BraunAbility, and the Community Foundation of Pulaski County are committed to increasing access and enhancing the lives of people living with disabilities in the Winamac area,” Belko said. “Through our collaboration, we will be building ramps in the community to provide greater accessibility to ensure everyone is able to access their own homes safely and freely. We are thankful for the support of BraunAbility, the Community Foundation of Pulaski County, and all the donors who are helping make this project a reality.”
Pulaski County Community Foundation has awarded SAWs with an $11,500 grant designated to serve five to six families with new, ADA-compliant custom ramps. Volunteers from BraunAbility are on board to help SAWs design and assemble each ramp at a client’s home.
“We are excited to be able to provide a more accessible community for people of all abilities and look forward to making a positive impact,” Belko said.

About SAWs
Founded in 2003, SAWs® (Servants at Work, Inc.) is a faith-based, volunteer-powered nonprofit organization serving clients throughout Indiana, as well as Arizona and Virginia. SAWs specializes in building wooden wheelchair ramps and for individuals living with permanent or long-term disabilities in low-income households.
In less than six hours, a custom-built SAWs ramp can transform a person’s life. After a SAWs ramp is built at their home, 90 percent of clients describe accessing their home as “easy” and 67 percent of clients can access their home independently. SAWs ramps are gateways, re-opening the possibilities of connecting with neighbors and the community, and helping clients choose to remain living in their own homes. In 2021, SAWs celebrated serving their 3,000th client, and are excited about growing to serve more clients every year. For more information or to donate online, please visit us at www.sawsramps.org
