The Pulaski County Housing Symposium was presented by the Housing Resource Hub and sponsored by CFPC and the Community Development Commission. Over 40 individuals attended, including employers, elected officials, businesses and residents. Housing challenges, market potential, issues and opportunities were discussed. |
Last fall, the Aspirations in Action steering committee formed and identified four key areas for action:
- Broadband
- Downtown Development
- Housing
- Recreation
Three of the areas have made positive strides to engage, educate and empower the people of Pulaski County to achieve their aspirations for a brighter future. These priorities are large and challenging, and progress will take time.
The most visible demonstration of progress to date was the Broadband Celebration in May that brought Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch to Pulaski County. She delivered the keynote address recognizing Pulaski County’s broadband readiness and advancement in all areas of the initiative.
She commented that leadership efforts focusing on the development of these priority areas will help attract growth to the county.
Another recent sign of progress was this summer’s Housing Symposium. The Housing Resource Hub is serving as the local housing department and has completed a county-wide housing study. Results of the study, types of housing needed, barriers and ways to move forward were discussed at the symposium.
Local officials, employers, lenders and other interested individuals attended. Providing desirable housing for individuals who want to live and work here is a positive economic strategy for growth.
Downtowns are also key economic health indicators and demonstrate community pride, local quality of life, and partnership between private and public sectors. A new Main Street organization for Winamac’s downtown is forming and will offer opportunities for additional volunteers to visit successful Main Street communities and help launch projects toward building a thriving community that will attract newcomers to both visit and stay.
