The bridge committee received an important fundraising boost this month with a $20,000 donation from Carroll-White REMC. Committee members are particularly excited as the donation resulted from the group’s very first appeal letter in February 2021.
“It was a hope, and now it’s going to be a dream come true,” said fund committee member Kathi Thompson.
A variety of fund-raising methods, including events, letters, social media, news releases and direct solicitation are being used by the bridge committee to build support for the project.
Donations for the project are coming in from the events, plus businesses, clubs and other organizations, and individuals.
“The support the county community is giving to the project, and to the veterans for whom this bridge stands, is encouraging,” said Greg Henry, project organizer. “It’s important to remember, though, that the commitment must continue to reach our ultimate goal. We cannot rest until after then.”
The centennial committee’s plan is to professionally illuminate the bridge “to bring this veterans’ memorial to life,” according to a project brochure. Committee members acknowledge they have taken on an ambitious project. But their hard work and the support of the county community promises to produce spectacular results to “light up the legacy” of the bridge and all it stands for.
The VFW Post 1728 of Winamac, a not-for-profit organization, serves as the umbrella sponsor for the Memorial Swinging Bridge Project, and as such, any donation is tax deductible.
