Celebrating its 90th year, the Iris-Elm Garden Club chose to salute the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment for its civic project this year.
The Iris-Elm Garden Club’s mission is to promote the love of gardening through civic engagement and community plantings. A partnership with WOW has enabled the club to honor the Suffragette movement through beautiful plantings throughout Winamac.
The WOW Planters, the “Pollinator Garden” beds at the Historic Winamac Freight Depot, and the Blue Star Marker at Winamac Town Pathway Park all feature the Suffragette “tri-colors” of purple, white, and yellow.
Why purple, white, and yellow? The American Suffragette movement used the tri-colors to signify loyalty, purity, and life. In the United States, this group of media-savvy women adorned themselves in the tri-colors and used branding to carry their movement forward with a consistent and engaging message about women’s right to vote.
The Iris-Elm Garden Club salutes these women through the use of the tri-colors in their plantings and a banner depicting the Women’s Movement, which can be seen on the caboose at the Freight Station.
WOW Representative Ryan Harrison, also from The Right Place Realtors, has taken the responsibility of maintaining the WOW planters. Members of the Iris-Elm Garden Club will be responsible for maintenance of the Freight Station Wagon, Pollinator Garden, and the Blue Star Memorial Marker for the 2020 season.
These plantings build upon the Iris-Elm Garden Club’s rich tradition of promoting the love of gardening, floral design, and civic and environmental responsibility.
The Iris-Elm Garden Club was formed in 1930 and is part of The Garden Clubs of Indiana and the National Garden Club which is the largest volunteer gardening organization in the world. The club meets on the first Thursday of each month at the Freight Depot in Winamac. For more information contact David Zahrt, president This email address is being protected from spambots.
