Pulaski County Coroner Jon Frain reported in a news release that dental analysis was used Thursday to make a positive identification. Next-of-kin was then notified.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s office reports the accident happened after 2 p.m., Memorial Day, when a pickup drove off the roadway and struck a tree.
A witness who happened on the scene observed the truck on fire and reported the crash to 911, as well as the truck’s license plate information. According to the police report, the pickup was fully engulfed in flames next to a group of trees when the first sheriff’s deputy arrived. There were parts from the truck scattered around the crash site and across the roadway.
Evidence at the scene indicated the truck was traveling eastbound, ran off the roadway for an unknown reason, and struck a tree head on, according to the police report, which added it appeared the truck did not apply its brakes. There was extensive damage to the front end of the truck.
The Winamac and Bass Lake/California Township volunteer fire departments extinguished the fire. Indiana conservation officer B. Klimick assisted at the scene with traffic control. Pulaski County EMS also assisted at the scene.
After the fire was extinguished, it was discovered there was one deceased person in the vehicle. The Pulaski County Coroner’s Office was then called to the scene.
Due to the extensive damage to the vehicle, police said the VIN could not be located, and the license plate was destroyed in the fire.
Indiana State Police were called to the scene for further documentation and accident investigation.
The cause and manner of the death is pending autopsy and toxicology results. The accident remains under inestigation.
