Several months ago, the hospital formed two Pandemic Task Force teams to begin preparations for its local response to the virus. These teams meet several times a week to monitor CDC and ISDH guidelines, prepare for changes in service models, and then respond accordingly to identified needs.
A portion of inpatient rooms was converted for patient isolation, screening stations were implemented at hospital entrances, and a drive-thru testing tent was set-up to quickly and safely test individuals for the virus.
“There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes,” said hospital CEO Tom Barry, “and I’m proud of the way our associates and providers have worked together to prepare for the local response.”
2020 has been an all-hands-on-deck moment in the hospital’s history, and every department has participated in the response.
These uncertain times make the annual commemoration of National Hospital Week even more special. Locally, the hospital staff has received displays of gratitude for their efforts on the front lines, battling this disease by serving the community.
The staff has had several meals donated from several local businesses. Edward Jones, Tippy’s Pizza, Bennett & Shepherd Insurance, Pizza Hut, Winamac Coil Spring, and Poblanos have all provided meals.
“Our staff appreciates the community support during this challenging time,” said chief nursing officer Linda Webb. “With long days and long hours, being able to take a break and eat a nice meal makes a big difference.”
Usually, on days when food is donated, the hospital has “Jean Days,” where the dress code is relaxed, and staff is encouraged to wear clothes that match a theme for the day. On those days, PMH gives a little back to the community.
“Staff donates to participate in Jean Day,” says Webb, “and that money is donated to the local seamstresses making masks for our community.”
National Hospital Week is an opportunity for all to acknowledge the dedicated individuals within healthcare who contribute to safer and exceptional patient care.
“Each PMH associate is essential to our success. Each department and every associate is needed to provide the patient care our community expects,” says Barry. “This week allows us to show our associates how thankful we are that they choose to work at PMH. We recognize the important role they play in caring for our patients by providing personalized care for everyone who requires help.”
National Hospital Week is May 10 – 16, and is sponsored by the American Hospital Association.
