The current fire department facility was built in 1952 and serves community needs including township meeting space and election polling in addition to fire response service and mutual aid assistance to adjoining counties.
The building lacks an emergency shelter space, technology infrastructure, efficient heating and cooling, a generator, adequate space for equipment and parking, and is not fully compliant with ADA regulations, among other necessities.
With these needs in mind, the fire department began the planning process to construct a new facility over 10 years ago. Since then, the organization has attained ownership of the corner at National and Main streets for the new department that will be approximately 11,000 square feet. Designs for the proposed facility include five apparatus bays, a large kitchen, baths with showers, multiple storage rooms, a radio room, and office space. The building will also be equipped with a building generator and large community room to serve as a dedicated emergency shelter.
The Fire Department is currently working with Indiana OCRA (Office of Community and Rural Affairs) for grant support, but encourages community support for the project via the new Medaryville Fire Station Construction Fund. The Community Foundation can accept donations at its Winamac office, by mail to P.O. Box 407, Winamac, or online through the foundation website at www.cfopc.org.
