William D. Hughes, 82, of Medaryville later died from his injuries Thursday (Jan. 9), at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. The second driver, Jason P. McIlvain, 42, Medaryville, was treated at the scene for minor bleeding to the face, according to the police report from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s department.
Police report Hughes was eastbound in this 2002 Ford Explorer on CR 200S when he failed to yield the right-of-way at the highway. He was struck by McIlvain, traveling south bound in this 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup on U.S. 421. McIlvain told police he was unable to avoid the collision with the SUV.
A witness who was following McIlvain told police confirmed the SUV pulled into the intersection in front of the pick-up truck. The witness also reported the pick-up did not have headlights on.
Hughes was ejected from his vehicle, while McIlvain was restrained in his truck by his seatbelt. The airbags deployed in both vehicles, according to the police report. Hughes was transported from the scene by Lutheran Air medics.
