Also contributing to the discussion were county CDC director Nathan Origer and Todd Zeiger of Indiana Landmarks.
Rowland presented three options to county leaders late this summer for the future of the courthouse, ranging in projected cost from $4.9 million to $9.8 million. The option selected by the commissioners Monday has been estimated at $7.7 million. Options for funding the proposed project are under development.
Following a comprehensive study of the courthouse structure earlier this year, Rowland made a presentation in August where he emphasized the courthouse is structurally sound. The primary goals of the architecture firm are to stabilize the structure and modernize systems (which would lead to increased energy savings).
The option selected Monday by the commissioners, while moving the circuit court to the justice center, will not move the location of the circuit court clerk’s office.
Discussion was raised at the joint session Monday about the possibility of moving county offices from the annex building on Riverside Drive to the renovated downtown court/justice buildings as a cost-saving measure. Origer will do some preliminary number-crunching on the suggestion.
A primary factor in moving the circuit court to the justice center has been for security issues, particularly in court appearances for jail inmates.
