The seventh phase of Lilly Endowment’s GIFT initiative offered Pulaski County $500,000 in matching dollars to encourage donors to grow endowments and to fund local community needs. The majority was designated to build unrestricted endowments with a $2 for $1 match ratio and the remainder for restricted gifts at a 50-cent for $1 match.
Unrestricted endowments support local projects and programs and help the Community Foundation board address changing needs in the community.
Missy Culp, chair of the Resource Development Committee stated, “GIFT VII offered a great opportunity to talk about building endowment for the future of our county.” Thanks to contributors and Lilly Endowment, CFPC’s overall endowment will grow by nearly $1 million."
The GIFT initiative is part of Lilly Endowment’s grantmaking to strengthen Indiana communities and has been a priority of Lilly Endowment since the first GIFT phase in 1990. The initiative’s primary aim is to help Indiana community foundations develop the philanthropic capacity to identify, prioritize and address local opportunities and challenges.
An additional component of GIFT VII involves community leadership grants. CFPC applied for a planning grant in 2019 to deepen its understanding of key community challenges and opportunities, and may apply for an implementation grant next year. This summer’s community conversations will culminate in a soon-to-be released comprehensive report for use by community organizations.
