Additionally, the first five parking spaces on the southwest corner of the courthouse will be reserved for members of the public who have business in the courthouse. They are also marked with signage.
The decision to create a single public entrance to the century-old building was made by the county commissioners in January.
The change was requested by maintenance director Mia Salyers out of concern for public safety in using the three stair-entrances to the courthouse. She explained to the commissioners that there are gaps in some of the stairs, and the access sidewalks are not level. Salyers also noted the new lower level west side entrance could eventually be used for a security checkpoint should county officials decide to do so.
Future renovation plans for the courthouse, which are awaiting final approval and a decision on funding, call for a single public entry to the main floor on the north (Main Street) side of the building for security checkpoint purposes and ADA compliance.
