Ruth A. Kamin

January 31, 2011

KNOX - Ruth A. Kamin, 90, of Monterey,  passed away Monday, Jan. 31.

Her parents were the late Henry F. and Emilie Trenkler Greinke. She married William F. Karmin. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, Phillip D. Kamin and June (Walter) Marks; a sister Marion Martin; and granchildren Kelly and Paul Marks.

Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. (CT), Thursday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Culver. The funeral service will be at 9 a.m. (CT), Friday (Feb. 4), at the church. Burial will follow at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Elmhurst, Ill.

The M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox is in charge of arrangements.

Emily C. Albrecht

December 7, 1920 to January 25, 2011

FRANCESVILLE - Emily Catherine Albrecht, 90, of 14533 West 550 South Francesville, died at 5:45 p.m.,, Tuesday, Jan. 25, at her home, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Dec. 7, 1920 in Rantoul, Ill., to the late Stanislaus and Clara Lena Rausch Federer. She married Jacob Albrecht, Jr. in 1945. He died May 4, 1986.

Mrs. Albrecht's family moved to Francesville from Illinois. She graduated from Francesville High School in 1940. She was a proud farm wife and enjoyed taking lunch to the men in the field and helping in any way she could. She was an avid supporter of the Republican Party.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to  12:30 p.m., Monday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville, The funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m., (Monday, Jan. 31), at the funeral home with Rev. Marjorie Egger officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorial donations may be given to the Ronald Reagan Rach or to the Jasper County Hospice.

Berla Ralph

April 26, 1932 to January 24, 2011

ROYAL CENTER - Berla Ralph, 78 of Star City, passed away at 3:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 24, at Monticello Assisted Living & Healthcare, Monticello.

Born April 26, 1932 in Coleman County, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Rouse) Carlisle. On Sept. 26, 1974 she married Eugene Ralph. He survives.

Also surviving are sons, David (Barb) McLeroy of Poland, Ohio, Joseph “JD” (Connie) McLeroy of Hanna, and Robert (Pam) Dooley of Marengo, Ill., daughters, Jackie (Rory) Dimos of Hobart, Laura (Jim) Dooley of Star City, Bonnie Drabek of Aurora, Ill. and Jackie Moore of Miller Beach. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, David, Cindy, Joe, Sarah, Emily, Michelle, John, Kelly, Erica, Chris, Rachel and Faith. She was also survived by 10 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by 7 brothers and 4 sisters.

Mrs. Ralph worked as a waitress for over 50 years, beginning at Mama Puntillo’s in Highland and later working at the Indian Head Restaurant, V.F.W. and the Bowling Alley all in Winamac and most recently at Oak Grove Restaurant in Star City. She was a member of Star City United Methodist Church and V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday,  at Star City United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday (Jan. 27), at the church with one hour of calling prior to the service. Pastor Ron Mabry will officiate. Burial will be at Star City West Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Star City United Methodist Church.

Nancy A. Crider

November 18, 1944 to January 17, 2011

NORTH JUDSON- Nancy A. Peregrine Crider, 66, of Winamac, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, at Golden Living Center, LaPorte.

Survivors include daughters Diana Taylor of Fort Wayne and Sharon Benoit of Walkerton; half-sister May Lou Hillenberg of Bloomington and half-brother Jim Peregrine of Bloomington; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held. 

The O’Donnell Funeral Home, North Judson, is in charge of arrangements.

K. Stuart Gast

September 16, 1912 to January 23, 2011

WINAMAC - K. Stuart Gast, 98, of 1038 E 315 S, Winamac, passed away at 10:59 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, in Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

He was born Sept. 16, 1912, in Akron, to the late Karl B. and Mabel Leininger Gast. His first marriage was to Imogene Huddleston in 1938. She passed away in 1945. He then married Lucile Powers Allen on May 14, 1988 in Winamac. She passed away March 10, 1992. He then married Rachel Cole Thompson on Sept. 10, 1995, in Star City. She passed away Oct. 10, 2010.

Mr. Gast was a native of Akron. He graduated from Akron High School, DePauw University, and received his law degree from Indiana University. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Winamac, 70-year member and a past president of the Winamac Kiwanis Club, Pulaski Co. Bar Association, and the Indiana Bar Association. He was a member and benefactor of the Pulaski County Historical Society. He was appointed Pulaski County Circuit Court Judge in the 1940s and was at the time the youngest circuit court judge in Indiana history. He was a partner in Horner, McDowell and Gast Law Firm which later became Gast and Shurn.

Mr. Gast was instrumental in starting boys baseball in the Winamac community. He was very active in the Winamac community during his lifetime, participating in many organizations and charities. He was a retired farmer and owned several farms during his lifetime.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The Winamac Kiwanis Club will conduct services at  6 p.m. The funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday (Jan. 27), at the funeral home with Rev. Matt Landry officiating. Burial will be in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac. Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.

Alma M. Long

April 15, 1929 to January 20, 2011

FRANCESVILLE - Alma M. Long, 81, of 11110 West 1000 South, Monon, passed away at 11:10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, at Monticello Assisted Living & Healthcare, Monticello.

She was born April 15, 1929 in Cincinnati, to the late Roscoe and Vera Leigh Gasteneau. She married Bill Long on June 11, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Francesville. He survives.

Mrs. Long was a member of the St. James-Salem United Church of Christ where she sang in the choir and was a part of the St. James Salem Guild. She had taught Sunday School at the Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Colonial Dames.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday (Jan. 24), at St. James-Salem United Church of Christ,
Francesville. The officiating clergy will be Pastor Jeff Messer. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Clyde E. Lindesmith

October 31, 1913 to January 19, 2011

WINAMAC - Clyde E. Lindesmith, 97, of 690 State St. MB 242, Franklin, formerly of Winamac and South Bend, passed away at 5:15 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the Indiana Masonic Home, Franklin.

He was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Winamac, to the late Marvin and Verna Terry Lindesmith. He married Eloise Reynolds in June 1937 in Winamac. She died on Sept. 18, 2009.

He was preceded in death by:

Mr. Lindesmith retired from the U.S. Department of Defense in 1975. He had worked in the procurement division of the U.S. Navy. As a young man, he worked at the family chick hatchery. He also had worked at the Logansport State Hospital.

He graduated from Winamac High School in 1932, and was a member of the Winamac basketball team that was the state tournament runnerup in 1932. He served as an aviation metalsmith in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While serving in the Solomon Islands aboard the USS Enterprise his aircraft was shot down. He survived for a time in the jungle before being rescued.He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Lindesmith was a member of the Winamac Masonic Lodge for over 68 years. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite in South Bend, the Orak Shrine and the Eastern Star. He was a longtime member of the Christian Church, American Legion, AMVETS and the VFW. He and his wife had resided at the Masonic Home in Franklin, since 1994.

Friends may call after 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A Masonic service and the funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., (Tuesday, Jan. 25), at the funeral home. Burial will be in Reed Cemetery, Winamac. The VFW and American Legion will conduct military graveside services.
