Jerry G. Sullivan Sr.

June 12, 1937 to September 5, 2016

WINAMAC - SFC, Jerry G. Sullivan Sr., U.S. Army Ret., 79, of Winamac, passed away at 6:11 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte.

He was born June 12, 1937 in North Judson.  On Oct. 3, 1959, he married Betty J. Burke in North Judson. She survives.

Before graduating from Winamac High School in 1955, Mr. Sullivan joined the U.S. Army Reserves and went on to attend Purdue University. Later in life, he proudly earned an associate’s degree online. He was a lifelong farmer in Franklin Township, Pulaski County. He served in the U.S. Army for 49 years, nine months, and 18 days and served as a U.S. Army recruiter before retirement. He was a member of the North Judson American Legion. He was a member of Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, North Judson. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he had previously served as secretary. He was an active member of the Pulaski County Republican Party, having served as Franklin Township precinct committeeman and was a former member of the Pulaski County Drainage Board. He was a proud member of the NRA. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed playing golf and in his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was very proud of his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home followed by a Knights of Columbus Service. A funeral mass will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, at Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, North Judson., with Rev. Terry Bennis officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Jacob’s Cemetery, North Judson.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society, or Knights of Columbus.

Rudolph Schultz

December 8, 1924 to September 5, 2016

WINAMAC - Rudolph H. "Rudy" Schultz, 91, of Kewanna, passed away at 5:56 a.m., Monday, Sept. 5, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

He was born Dec. 8, 1924 to the late Rudolph Herman and Freida Mohr Schultz in Hammond. On May 11, 1972, he married Janice K. Bucinski, who survives.

He is also survived by:

Mr. Schultz was raised in Medaryville. He was a World War II veteran, having served as a radar instructor in the U.S. Air Force. He was a retired Indiana State Trooper after 21 years. After retirement, he was an employee of the U. S. government, serving as a law enforcement officer and with the department of forestry for 13 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1728 in Winamac. He was also a member of the Winamac Masonic Lodge #228 F&AM and the South Bend Scottish Rite. In 2014, he received his Award of Gold. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, coin and metal detecting, and cooking. 

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. Masonic services will be at 11 a.m., Friday. The funeral service will follow visitation at 2 p.m., at the funeral home with Rev. Bert Woolson officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery, Winamac. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services. 

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or American Diabetes Association. 

Betty J. Griffey

March 23, 1932 to August 30, 2016

MEDARYVILLE - Betty Jean Griffey, 84, of Apache Junction, Ariz., (formerly of Medaryville), passed away at 2:10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, .at Melody Care Home in Apache Junction.

She was born March 23, 1932 in Rensselaer, to the late Otis G. and Gladys L. ElliotHershman. She married Homer Wayne Griffey on May 4, 1952 in Wheatfield. He preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2007.

Mrs. Griffey was a member of the Medaryville Christian Church and was a previous member of the Hebron Christian Church where she played piano during Sunday morning services for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother as well as a proud homemaker. She enjoyed her chocolates, crossword puzzles, and watching game shows on TV. Her family will forever miss her homemade chicken-and-noodles, one armed hugs, beautiful smile, gentle demeanor, positive attitude, selfless soul, and love for her family.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Sept. 3, at Medaryville Christian Church, Medaryville. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon, at the church. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Rensselaer.

Memorial donations may be given to the family to share with the staff who took care of Betty at Melody Care Home.

Ida M. Allen

September 18, 1916 to August 30, 2016

FRANCESVILLE - Ida M. Allen, 99, of Monticello, passed away at 10:55 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Monticello Healthcare.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1916 in Greenup County, Ky., to the late Ed and Jessie Callihan Rayburn. She married Joseph Allen in 1934 and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Allen and her husband moved to Jasper County in 1946 where they made their home and raised their family. She was a member of the Medaryville Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, and canning. She was an avid gardener and raised all the food she needed to feed her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family and nursing home staff were looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday.The family wishes to thank the staff of Monticello Healthcare for their loving care of Ida over the last 12 years.

Private burial will be at White Post Cemetery, Medaryville.

Madolynne J. Werner

January 16, 1924 to August 28, 2016

WINAMAC - Madolynne Joyce Werner, 92, of Winamac, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28.

She was born Jan. 16, 1924 in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Harry R. Sr. and Anna L. Balch Nelson. She married Robert Werner on Feb. 4, 1945 in Kalamazoo. He preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1973.

Mrs. Werner was a dedicated farm wife and mother. She always put her husband and children first.  Over the years she had worked at Tee-Pac and Singer/Eaton. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, reading, and watching western movies (especially John Wayne). She loved her family very much and will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 31, and one hour prior to services Thursday at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral servics will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 1, at  with Rev. Ruth Waite and Don Franklin officiating.  Burial will be at Winamac Cemetery, Winamac.

Memorial donations may be given to American Heart Association.

Shirley L. Peters

September 9, 1945 to August 24, 2016

WINAMAC - Shirley Lee Peters, 70, of Winamac, passed away at 8:10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

She was born Sept. 9, 1945 at home in Winamac to the late Merle and Wanetta Allen Ezra.
