Donald R. Rausch

June 22, 1946 to December 4, 2020

ROYAL CENTER - Donald Richard Rausch, 74, of Winamac passed away unexpectedly at 9:11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 22, 1946, the son of Casper Christian “Cap” and Frances Elizabeth Reidelbach Rausch. He briefly attended St. Joseph College before pursuing what came natural to him, farming. He was innovative, determined, hardworking and somewhat of a gambler, of course, but he always managed to tend a crop come rain or come shine and spent the last 54 harvests in a combine.

He is survived by his best friend and partner Beulah ‘Bea’ Braun and her three sons Thomas, Charles (Brittney), and Lucas (JoAnna); son Tim (Melissa) Ritchie; daughter Jody (Josiah) Klinedinst; sisters, Carolyn (Ken) Harpole and Deborah (Mark) Moss; brother Robert (Maureen Callahan) Rausch; several grandchildren, a great-grandchild; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Theodore Rausch, and Lois Vollmer who was like a daughter to him.

In addition to farming, Mr. Rausch was a “grease monkey,” an avid hunter, card player, sports fan and enjoyed tractor pulls. His passion and favorite past time was racing. All roads led to the race track where he racked up the points year-in and year-out winning King of the Hill and Ironman at his favorite drag strip. Competitive spirit notwithstanding, it was the comraderyand friendships he collected that mattered most. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Royal Order of Moose Lodge 3000, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elk’s Warsaw Lodge #802, NRA and IHRA Motorsports. A consummate good time and source of strength, his presence will be missed!

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20, at Rans Funeral Home, Harrison Chapel, Royal Center. A private family funeral mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Winamac. Burial will be at Franklin Township Cemetery at a later date.

Per Mr. Rausch’s wishes, a celebration of life event will be held at the Eagles Lodge, where the last drink will be on Don, at a later date.

WINAMAC - Kathryn Margaret Winters Wikert, 79, of White Plains, Md., passed away at 8:50 p.m., Monday, Nov. 30, at Georgetown Hospital after complications with lung disease/pneumonia.

She was born Sept. 29, 1941 to Owen William and Geraldine Arlie Hatfield Winters in Monterey. After graduating from Monterey High School in 1959, she was recruited by the federal government for a civil service position working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1960.

After marrying in 1962, she moved to White Plains, Md. in 1968 where she remained and raised her two children.

She is survived by her brother James (Bertha) Winters; sister Shirley (Mont) Hoover; brother Dick (Sue) Winters; sister-in-law Jerry Winters; son William “Bill” Wikert; daughter Brenda (Chris) Howard; and her four grandchildren, Julia Howard, Camryn Howard, Amanda Wikert, and Connor Wikert.

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Jack and Wayne Winters.

Mrs. Wikert was a great supporter of her children playing in recreational and high school sports. She never missed a game and was known by many for her enthusiastic cheering in the stands, whether it was football, softball, or baseball. She coached many years for her daughter’s softball team and umpired for Southern Maryland Youth Organization (SMYO) in the 70s/80s. She also played softball several years in the local Southern Maryland Women’s league; enjoyed playing Bingo and Rummikub with her friends; has been an avid bowler from the early days playing duckpin at Curly’s and bowling on many leagues at AMF Waldorf Lanes. As of last year she had been bowling on two teams: Waldorf Wonders and Tuesday Morning Mix. She was known for her lively conversations, strong opinions, many laughs, and would strike up a conversation with anyone during her outings around town.

During those early years she took a break from working with the federal government to stay home with her children and eventually, after working locally several years, she went back to work at the FBI. After retiring from the FBI as a paralegal specialist/training instructor in January 2003, she dedicated her life to her four grandchildren and taking many trips with friends. As with her children’s sports, she was able to be her grandchildren’s spirited cheerleader at their games for baseball, softball, lacrosse, cheerleading competitions, and field hockey. She loved being outside and maintaining her yard. Even this past summer, after battling lung cancer, she was back out mowing the lawn, and working in her vegetable garden. She was proud of her beautiful peony, lilac and forsythia bushes that bloomed every year.
