 Registration for this year’s youth Summer Reading program, “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” is happening now! Visit the website and Facebook page to learn more.

Kids’ “Adventure Begins” Summer Reading Activities take place on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. These programs consist of crafts, stories and more based around a weekly theme, such as bears, worms and butterflies. Visit the library’s website to see what’s happening on a particular day.

 A special guest visits on Wild Wednesdays to teach kids about something from the natural world. This program is for children in kindergarten and up, and is held on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. over the summer.

 June 1 and 2 are Free Fishing Days in Indiana. Check out a fishing pole at the library with your library card ahead of this day so you can get out there and fish!

 Brenda Hadley will lead Reiki for the Caregiver from 5 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, Reiki is intended to encourage emotional or physical healing by placing hands on or near the body. This program is for anyone who provides care for another person in any capacity: a parent, child, friend or other. Sign-up is encouraged – call the library to reserve your spot.

 Come to the library to participate in a Guided Meditation led by Brenda Hadley at 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 4. Mindfulness meditation can help to reduce stress, improve concentration and increase self-awareness. You do not need any prior experience with meditation or any special equipment to participate in this program. Sign-up is encouraged. Call the library at 574-946-3432 to reserve your spot.

 All ages and skill levels are welcome at Yoga at the Library. Sessions will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, June 8 and June 22. Weather permitting, yoga will take place outside in the grassy area next to the cabin; otherwise it will be held indoors. Limited yoga mats are available—bring yours if you have one.

 The library is hosting a Stuffed Animal Sleepover Thursday, June 13. Kids may drop off their plush friends that day, and we will take photos of all the fun things the animals get up to during their sleepover that night. You’ll be able to pick up your stuffed animal along with the photos Saturday, June 15.

 Join us for Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday Party! Kids will get to learn about fire safety and meet and take pictures with the big guy in person. This program will take place at 5 p.m., Thursday, June 13, at the pavilion next to the artesian well on the west side of the Swinging Bridge (weather permitting; otherwise it will be held indoors at the library).

Book Club will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 14. The book up for discussion is Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. The meeting will take place in the Magnolia Room at the library. We can email a Zoom link to any attendees who wish to participate virtually who register in advance. To sign up, call the library at 574-946-3432.

 Brenda Hadley will lead Chair Yoga at the library at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 20. Chair yoga is a gentle movement exercise that can be done while sitting on a chair. It’s a great option for people who have limited mobility or are otherwise unable to practice traditional yoga. Sign-up is encouraged – call the library to reserve your spot.

 Join us for an evening of creativity at our “Canvas & Beyond” Adult Canvas Painting workshop from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 20. All materials will be provided for the class. Space is limited; advance sign-up is required. Call the library to reserve your spot.

 See a variety of reptiles, mammals, birds, and bugs at the library at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 22. Silly Safaris’ live animal shows feature positive human-animal interaction and educate about wild animal conservation. This show will be a great blend of fact and fun for all ages.

 

Regular Summer Programs:

 Kids can use their imaginations to make amazing creations with Legos at Lego Builders all day on Mondays over the summer.

 Come in for Story Time and activities for toddlers on Toddler Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. If you can’t make it in the morning, Afternoon Story Time is held on Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m.

Hoosier Explorers is a casual social gathering for seniors and retirees. Meetings include games, presentations and light discussions. Hoosier Explorers is held at the library on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m.

 The library shows a Family Movie suitable for all ages every Wednesday morning over the summer at 10:30. Visit the library’s website to see what is playing on a particular date.

 The library’s collection of Board Games for all ages is available all day on Thursdays.

 Drop in anytime on Fridays to make a fun Kids’ Craft. Crafts will be available while supplies last. Any extra craft kits will be available the following week while supplies last.

‘Evening at the Bridge’ set for July 3

Final events for Swinging Bridge centennial

WINAMAC – A pair of events are set to conclude the 100th anniversary celebration of the Memorial “Swinging” Bridge at the Winamac park which began last summer with the new LED lighting system installed on the footbridge.

The two events will be Wednesday, July 3. The first will be a dedication and burial of a time capsule at 5:30 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Park (corner of Washington Street and U.S. 35). The second will be a family-friendly “Evening at the Bridge” gathering, following at 6 p.m., at the east-end of the bridge in the park.

4-H Fair Parade July 2

The annual Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair Parade, with the theme "Creativity Blooms in 4-H," will step off at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, in downtown Winamac.

The parade is organized by the Winamac Kiwanis Club in partnership with the Pulaski County Fair Association. The parade grand marshal will be 2023 Halleck Award winner Mike O'Connor. 

Summer programs underway among PCPL June activities

The Pulaski County Public Library has listed its programs and activities for June. They include summer reading programs for all ages, a “stuffed animal sleepover,” an 80th birthday party for Smokey Bear, another adult canvas painting workshop and a visit by Silly Safaris.

Pulaski County Farmers Market open for 2024 season

Pulaski County Farmers Market is open for the summer season with a weekly locations in Winamac.

The Market features fresh produce, plus, local meats, maple syrup, honey, eggs, baked goods, sweet treats, cut flowers and coffee. The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturdays June through September, on Main Street in front of the courthouse in Winamac.

Parkview plans public Summer Festival series, including a farmers market

FRANCESVILLE – A monthly Summer Festival series has been planned by Parkview Haven in Francesville to run June through September at its facility on the north edge of town.

The event will feature a farmers market, plus local vendors, food trucks, arts and crafts and more. The public is welcome to participate.

Pulaski County Historical Society Museum open Saturdays

The Pulaski County Historical Society is open Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  (unless posted otherwise on Facebook). The museum is located in the “Carriage House” at 500 S. Monticello St. (U.S. 35), Winamac.

New to the museum are the interactive features which allow visitors to explore the extensive history of the county’s Native American peoples – from the Ice Age to the Indian removals in the 1840s. Other interactive displays feature stories of Casimir Pulaski, local historical sites, and Winamac “Bits and Pieces.”

State Road 14 to be closed east of Winamac

PULASKI/FULTON COUNTIES - SR 14 will close Wednesday (May 8) between CR 1100W and SR 17 in Fulton County. Approximately 1-mile closures will continue westward sequentially until the scheduled pipe replacements have been completed. Resurfacing of the entire roadway will follow.

While local access will be maintained, through traffic should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow US 35, SR 10 and SR 17.

2024 Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair runs June 28-July 3

The annual Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair will run Friday, June 28 through Wednesday, July 3 at the county fairgrounds in the Winamac town park.  

The motto for the 2024 fair is Creativity Blooms in 4-H. Highlights of this year's fair, in addition to the 4-H exhibits and judging, will be an inflatable play center (Saturday and Sunday), musical entertainment, open class exhibits, queen pageants, youth talent show, hot air balloon-tethered rides, sports tournaments, the fair parade and 4-H Auction. 

Four contestants seek 2024 Miss Pulaski County title

Miss Pulaski County 2024 will be crowned Friday evening (June28) from among four contestants at the annual pageant. The 2023 Queen Alexia Intravaia will crown her successor after giving her farewell speech.

The mission of the Miss Pulaski County Queen Pageant is to empower young women in Pulaski County through personal growth, networking and community involvement.

Eleven 4-H'ers complete 10 years in program in 2024

Pulaski County has had hundreds of youth in the 4-H program, but only a select few will make the commitment to participate in all 10 years of eligibility. At the 2024 Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair, 11 4-H’ers will complete their 10th year in this national program which teaches values and skills which will guide them as they enter adulthood.

They will be recognized at the 4-H Achievement Program at 6 p.m., Friday June 28.

2024 4-H Royalty to be selected from five candidates

One of the primary goals of the Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair is to showcase the projects completed by the county's 4-H youth - demonstrating what they have learned in this valuable program which develops talents as well as important skills and values.

The annual 4-H Achievement Program will be held on opening day at the fair, at 6 p.m., Friday, June 28, at the fairgrounds in Winamac. The 2024 4-H Royalty will be crowned during the program. 4-H tenure members will be honored, and 4-H adult volunteers will be recognized.

Students can now apply for $5K work-based learning scholarships

STATEHOUSE (May 20) – State Reps. Kendell Culp (R-Rensselaer) and Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) encourage high school students who want to pursue work-based learning and credentials to apply for a Career Scholarship Account.

Culp said Hoosier students in grades 10-12 at a state accredited public or private school can receive up to a $5,000 state-funded scholarship to pursue apprenticeships, applied learning experiences, work-based learning and credentials attainment. About 2,000 spots are available for the 2024-25 school year and students may  apply for a Career Scholarship Account until the Oct. 1 deadline.

 

Young praises Senate passage of FAA reauthorization focused on improving safety, advancing technology

Update: House also passes aviation bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, praised Senate passage of the bipartisan Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2024.

The legislation, which passed the Senate 88-4 Thursday (May 9), reauthorizes the FAA for five years. The bill includes several provisions to strengthen aviation safety and oversight at the FAA, address air traffic controller shortages, require airlines to seat families together, and support the next generation of aviation technology innovations.

State Police seeking public assistance locating endangered Cass County juvenile

The Indiana State Police is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Bryson Muir, a 14-year-old male from Logansport who is believed to be endangered. 

He was last seen Sunday, June 16, leaving a family member’s residence in Ohio with his mother, Kristen Muir in a white 2015 Chevrolet Suburban belonging to Servant Leader’s Foundation in Kokomo.  Shortly after leaving this residence, this vehicle was pulled over by the Garfield Heights (OH) Police Department, but Bryson was not in the vehicle.

Eleven candidates file for school board elections at Eastern Pulaski, West Central

Candidate filing for fall school board elections closed at 12 noon, Thursday, June 20 for eight open seats. Eleven candidates filed for the election. The contested race will be for the three EPCS seats representing Monroe Township.

The elections will take place during the Nov. 5 General Election.

Food Finders Food Bank celebrates, purchases Market Square property

LAFAYETTE (June 10) - Food Finders Food Bank has announced the purchase of its Market Square property – the location of the Fresh Market pantry.

The food bank services 16 area counties, including Pulaski County, with its supplemental food programs and services – including the well-known mobile food pantries.

West Central wraps up one school year, looks toward next

FRANCESVILLE – The West Central School board heard reports on summer school, software transitions, upcoming school facility projects, end-of-school-year programs, and plans for the next school year at its busy June meeting.

The board also heard that its wind turbine had a suspected lightning strike, school officials are awaiting PowerGrid Partners to come onsite to conduct repairs.

New accessible walkway available at Tippecanoe River State Park 

WINAMAC - Tippecanoe River State Park guests with mobility challenges who want to enjoy the overlook to the park’s waterfowl area now have the option of using its new accessible sidewalk.

“This is a great area to sit on a bench and enjoy the wildlife and natural surroundings,” said property manager Vernon Gillum. “Turtles, frogs, snakes and songbirds are frequent visitors to this area, and other wildlife as well, such as hawks, raccoons and waterfowl can also be seen.”

Bonds sold for courthouse renovation project

Meridian Street to partially close for construction

The bond sale for the financing of the Pulaski County Courthouse renovation project was conducted Thursday (May 16) by Baker Tilly, the county’s accounting and financial advising firm.

Details remain to be completed, and closing is expected in early June. The successful buyer was R.W. Baird & Co., an investment firm headquartered in Milwaukee.
