May is Mental Health Month, dedicated to prioritizing our well-being and promoting open conversations about mental health. Pick up a Mental Health Toolkit at the library for tips on how you can increase resiliency and improve your mental health.
Saturday, May 4, is Free Comic Book Day. Stop in anytime during library hours to pick up a free comic book. We’ll have comic books for all ages. While you’re here, check out the library’s extensive graphic novel collection, too.
Come in for a variety of special Story Times this month, including:
- Star Wars Story Time: Saturday, May 4, 10 and 11:30 a.m.
- Mother’s Day Story Time & Craft: Saturday, May 11, 10 and 11:30 a.m.
- Mister Rogers & Daniel Tiger “143 Day” Story Time: Tuesday, May 21, 10:30 a.m.
- Race Car Story Time: Saturday, May 25, 10 and 11:30 a.m.
Brenda Hadley will lead Reiki for the Caregiver from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturday, May 4. Reiki is intended to encourage emotional or physical healing by placing hands on or near the body. This program is for anyone who provides care for another person in any capacity: a parent, child, friend, or other. Sign-up is encouraged – call the library to reserve your spot.
Teen Activity Board will meet at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 9 p.m.; and at 3 p.m., Wednesday, May. These gatherings feature a fun mix of activities, education and food for all participants. All local teens, ages 12-18, are welcome to attend.
Book Club will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 10. The book up for discussion is Grandma Gatewood’s Walk by Ben Montgomery. The meeting will take place in the Magnolia Room at the library. We can email a Zoom link to any attendees who wish to participate virtually who register in advance. To sign up, call the library at 574-946-3432.
May 12 is a Free Fishing Day in Indiana. Check out a fishing pole at the library with your library card ahead of this day so you can get out there and fish.
Learn about the Panhandle Pathway’s past, present, and future with Friends of the Panhandle Pathway at Hoosier Explorers at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 14. John and Kaye will talk about the history of the trail, future construction plans, upcoming activities, and more.
Brenda Hadley will lead Chair Yoga at the library at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 16. Chair yoga is a gentle movement exercise that can be done while sitting on a chair. It’s a great option for people who have limited mobility or are otherwise unable to practice traditional yoga. Sign-up is encouraged – call the library to reserve your spot.
Join us for an evening of creativity at our “Canvas & Beyond” Adult Canvas Painting workshop from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 16. All materials will be provided for the class. Space is limited; advance sign-up is required. Call the library to reserve your spot.
Registration for this year’s Summer Reading program, “Adventure Begins at Your Library,” will begin on Tuesday, May 28. Watch for more info on our website and Facebook page!
Regular Programs:
Kids can use their imaginations to make amazing creations with Legos at Lego Builders on Mondays from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Come in for Story Time and activities for toddlers on Toddler Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. If you can’t make it in the morning, Afternoon Story Time is held on Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m.
Hoosier Explorers is a casual social gathering for seniors and retirees. Meetings include games, presentations and light discussions. Hoosier Explorers is held at the library on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m.
E-Sports is our newest program for teens. At E-Sports, teens get together to play video games from Super Smash Bros. to Minecraft. This program is open to all local teenagers and meets weekly at the library on Tuesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
The library shows a Family Movie suitable for all ages every Wednesday at 3 p.m. Visit the library’s website to see what is playing on a particular date.
On Thursday mornings at 10:30, Duplo bricks and larger blocks are available for toddlers to play with at Toddler Legos.
The library’s collection of Board Games for all ages is available on Thursdays after school.
