Registration to receive toys, food and clothing is now underway at Pulaski County Human Services, 115 W. Pearl St., Winamac.

Organizations and individuals wishing to donate toys or food, or purchase clothing - or those who wish to volunteer - should call 946-6500 and ask for Linda or Jacki.

As its name implies, CLASP (Coordinated Local Assistance Service Project) is an organized effort of several local service agencies to provide coordination among those individuals and groups sponsoring holiday assistance projects. CLASP maintains a comprehensive list of families in need, and thus provides a means to avoid duplication or omission. Partners in the program include area churches, service organizations, school groups, law enforcement, businesses and individuals.

Participation in Toy Store is for income-eligible individuals and families who have completed application forms. For those needing assistance, application forms are available at the Human Services sites at 115 W. Pearl St., Winamac; or at 510 E. Main St., Medaryville. This project is for residents of Pulaski County, regardless of where children go to school.

All gift and toy donations for the annual Toy Store should be delivered to PCHS by Dec. 1.

CLASP coordinators will also be collecting food items to place in its holiday food boxes, which will be distributed Dec. 4-8. For those wishing to donate for the food baskets, the following is a list of items needed: boxed potato flakes, canned cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, dinner rolls, butter/margarine, hams/beef roast, cake mix, canned frosting, apple sauce. Food donations should be delivered to PCHS by Dec. 1.

Food items are also always needed for the community Food Pantry overseen by PCHS. Donations of new clothing items are also accepted at the holiday season.

All items for CLASP should be delivered to PCHS located at 115 W. Pearl St. Winamac. Please call ahead 946-6501 to let staff know when you are coming to drop off items.

Anyone not able to pick up items on the Toy Store day must call and make arrangements to pick up with PCHS.

Salvation Army 'Kettle Campaign' to run Nov. 22 - Dec.23

The Salvation Army of Pulaski County has announced its annual holiday kettle campaign will run Nov. 22 - Dec. 23, in the lobby at Sanders Grocery in Winamac.

Funds raised during the campaign will be utilized in Pulaski County.

 
CFPC to participate in #GivingTuesday Nov. 28

Community Foundation of Pulaski County (CFPC) will participate in #GivingTuesday for the third year in a row, encouraging giving back to the communities we live and work in.

Occurring this year on Nov. 28, the annual day of giving is held each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

 
Pulaski County Historical Society membership drive underway

The Pulaski County Historical Society welcomes new - and "re-newed" members as it launches its annual membership drive for 2018.

As 2017 draws to a close, many current or new members may prefer to pay their tax deductable memberships before the new year begins. Memberships also make thoughtful gifts for the holiday season.

 
PCPL lists November events

The Pulaski County Public Library has listed its special programs and activities for November which include a Heavenly Dairy class, Health Insurance Marketplace one-on-one sessions, make-and-take sweater mittens and a sandhill cranes presentation.

Next Food Finders Mobile Pantry visit Dec. 1

The next Food Finders Mobile Pantry Food Give Away Day will begin at 11 a.m., Friday (Dec. 1), at the Pulaski County Highway Garage, U.S. 35 North, Winamac.

The Mobile Pantry will be distributing food, possibly including fozen meat, beverages, snacks, baked goods, vegetables and cereal to people in need in the Winamac area.

 
Plans underway for Chamber's Winter Wonderland Dec. 2

The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce will once again ring in the holidays with its 15th annual Winter Wonderland, set for Saturday, Dec. 2, in Winamac.

The event will feature activities at Eastern Pulaski Elementary School, downtown Winamac, and the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac. Also, merchants and businesses countywide are encouraged to hold special sales and activities during the day.

 
CLASP annual Toy Store Dec. 9; volunteers welcome

CLASP's annual Toy Store will be Saturday, Dec. 9,  from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at Pulaski County Human Services (PCHS), on the corner of Pearl and Logan streets, Winamac.

Give thanks for good health by donating blood this holiday season

The next local opportunity to donate blood to the American Red Cross will be from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 29, at West Central High School, U.S. 421, Francesville.

The American Red Cross encourages people to share their good health this holiday season by donating blood for patients in need.

 
4-H enrollment opens for Pulaski County

Pulaski County 4-H enrollment opened Oct. 1, and will run through Jan. 15.

New and current 4-H members can enroll by going online at https://in.4honline.com or by picking up an enrollment form at any of the local schools or the Extension Office. There is a $15 state program fee for each 4-H member to enroll in 4-H. Kindergarten through second grade members are exempt.

Food Finders Food Bank receives pet food donation

LAFAYETTE - Food Finders Food Bank recently received a pet food donation of 820 bags of dog and cat food totaling 31,160 pounds from PetSmart’s Buy a Bag, Give a Meal program. For every bag of pet food purchased from PetSmart until Dec. 31, they will donate a meal to a pet in need.

The families Food Finders serves often struggle with difficult choices like paying the rent or buying food, and some have to choose between keeping their pet and putting food on the table. Pets provide comfort and become part of the family, and people who are struggling financially more than likely will need food for their pets as well.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I.

Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.

 
Food Finders Food Bank kicks off 'Drive Away Hunger'

LAFAYETTE – Food Finders Food Bank is launching its annual Drive Away Hunger Fall Food Drive, a community-wide effort from Oct.19 through Dec. 1.

Drive Away Hunger represents a community-wide effort to raise 400,000 meals during a six-week campaign. Food Finders is calling on the community to unite in helping to stock the food bank’s shelves to ensure that our neighbors facing hunger have enough to eat this winter.

 
Indiana Dept. of Agriculture launches conservation ‘one-stop’

INDIANAPOLIS – Improving water quality and soil health continues to be a priority for farmers statewide, and while data has always been available to support this claim, it hasn’t been accessible in one, easily navigable location.

Important corrections made to Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide

Indiana deer and waterfowl hunters need to be aware of two important changes in the print version of the 2017-2018 Hunting & Trapping Guide.

Due to recent legislation passed this year by the Indiana General Assembly, hunters can no longer use rifles when hunting deer on public land. “Public land” includes both state and federal property. Before the change, the use of rifles on public land had been legal.

 
Governor’s order begins process to distribute $40.9 million from VW settlement

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb signed Thursday (Oct. 12) an executive order outlining next steps to distribute Indiana’s $40.9 million portion of the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund (trust fund), which was formed as a result of a settlement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the Volkswagen Corporation for its violation of the federal Clean Air Act.

The executive order establishes the Indiana Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund Committee and names the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) as the beneficiary of and the administrative agency for the trust fund.

CFPC awards youth grants

Two county youth organizations have recently been awarded grants totaling $800 through the Good Oil/BP Youth Philanthropy Fund.

Checks were presented to Boy Scout Troop #229 to support their 2018 Summer Camp, and to the Winamac Community High School Arts Department for “Sculpting Clay/Shaping Futures” project.

 
EPCS board approves teachers' master contract

WINAMAC - A new master contract with the Eastern Pulaski Teachers Association was approved by the Eastern Pulaski Community School Board at its month meeting Monday evening (Nov. 13).

Superintendent Dan Foster recommended an approximate three percent increase in compensation and some updated language in the contract. The contract was earlier approved by the teachers association.

 
Winamac Community Pool Committee continues to raise funds, study options

WINAMAC - The Winamac Community Pool Committee will go forward with efforts to raise funds for a new town pool, as it was charged to do when formed two years ago - even without the support of the Winamac Town Council which was unexpectedly withdrawn last month.

That was the word from pool committee chairman Judy Heater at an informational meeting last week. The committee will also study any alternative options it may have.

 
Gutwein to retire from BraunAbility; Staci Kroon to succeed as president and CEO

WINAMAC - Nick Gutwein, who has led BraunAbility since 2008, has announced his retirement to BraunAbility’s board of directors.

The board has selected Staci Kroon as the new president and CEO, and she will assume the role on Nov. 27. She will also serve as a director for BraunAbility.

 
Winamac Kiwanis distributes dictionaries to EPES, WCES third graders

Once again, the Winamac Kiwanis Club has distributed a dictionary to every third grader at Eastern Pulaski and West Central elementary schools.

In early November, nine members of the Kiwanis Club visited both schools to give 160 dictionaries, which are the student’s to keep and use throughout the school year at school or home. Many teachers find the specific dictionary provided incredibly useful – as it includes a lot more than just words.

 
Huggler hired as new basketball coach at Winamac Community HS

WINAMAC - Alan Huggler will return to the helm as varsity basketball coach at Winamac Community High School, following approval by the Eastern Pulaski Community School Board in a special session Monday evening (Nov. 6).

Huggler, 52, is a math teacher at the high school. He coached the Warriors for four seasons, from 2003-07. He was selected from among nine candidates who applied for the coaching position.

 
West Central School Board approves teacher contracts

FRANCESVILLE - The West Central School Board approved teacher contracts at its monthly meeting Thursday (Nov. 2).

Teacher salary is based upon 2016-17 evaluations, which are based upon the State ISTEP and state-assigned letter grades for schools.

 
4-H Junior Leaders, Sunshine Society conduct food drive

The Pulaski County Junior Leaders 4-H Club and the Winamac Community High School Sunshine Society collected over 1,000 pounds of food during their annual food drive Oct. 24.

The "Trick-or-Treat So Others Can Eat" food drive was conducted that evening in Winamac and Francesville.
