Winamac Community HS names top seniors

WINAMAC - Valedictorian Jack DeGroot and Salutatorian Claire Collins will stand at the head the Class of 2017 at commencement ceremonies later this month at Winamac Community High School.

Jack is the son of Perry and Katie DeGroot, and Claire is the daughter of Adam and Jill Collins, all of Winamac.

Graduation will be at 7 p.m., Friday, May 26, at the WCHS gymnasium.

Jack will attend Butler University. His high school activities have included Athletic Leadership Council, National Honor Society, STEM Club, Conference Math Team, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He participated in football, basketball and baseball. He is a member of St. Peter's Church Youth Group.

His awards and honors include Lilly Scholarship, Martin Luther King Jr. "Dignity Award," distinguished honor roll, DAR Good Citizen award, Colts Academic All-State, and Basketball Academic All-State.

Clairewill attend Indiana State University to major in education, and participate on the cross country and track teams. She was recently selected as one of ten freshman students to participate in the ISU Bayh College of Education "Scholars to Teachers" cohort.

Her high school activities included National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Team, Athletic Leadership Council (president), Student Council, Sunshine Society (co-president), and Drama Department. She participated in four years of cross country (team captain), four years of track (team captain) and three years of basketball (team captain). She is a member of the Winamac First United Methodist Church Youth Group.

Her awards and honors include: Cross Country - four-time semi-state qualifier, twice Conference Runner of the Year, school record holder, four-times Most Valuable Runner, Academic All-Conference, four-time All-State Honorable Mention; Basketball - Academic All-Conference, two-time winner of the Defense Award; Track - three-time Sectional Champion in 1600 and 3200, school record holder in 3200, Most Valuable Runner (three years), Academic All-Conference, state qualifier in 3200. She was presented with the Martin Luther King Jr. "Dignity Award."
