Police action shooting in Knox results in death of Plymouth man

KNOX - A Plymouth man is dead following a police action shooting in Knox Wednesday morning (Dec. 21).

The Indiana State Police were contacted by the Starke County Sheriff's Department to investigate the incident which occurred at 9:22 a.m. (CST), at 3120 S. U.S. 35 in Knox.

Preliminary investigation shows that at approximately 9:15 a.m., Knox city and Starke County Sheriff's deputies went to the location to serve a felony warrant. In the process of the warrant service, a black GMC pickup truck drove through the closed garage door of the business striking a Starke County Sheriff's marked police car.  

The vehicle/suspect then continued and attempted to run over another officer as it tried to flee the scene. Officers then fired their weapons striking the vehicle, as well as the suspect who was driving the vehicle. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, according to a state police press release.

The suspect was then transported to the I.U. Hospital in Knox where he succumbed to his injuries. The Starke County Coroner's Office has been notified.

Identity of the deceased is William R Newman, 46, of Plymouth.

 

UPDATE:

The Indiana State Police has the following information to release in regard to the incident that took place in Knox on Dec. 21:

William R. Newman had an active warrant out of Fulton County for failure to appear for dealing methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine. Newman had a second warrant for a parole violation which was issued by the Indiana State Parole Board.

The officers involved in the shooting are as follows: Harold Smith, Chief, Knox City Police Department, 23 years of service; Chad Dulin, Corporal, Knox City Police Department, 10 years of service; and Donald Ferguson, Detective, Starke County Sheriff's Department, 7 years of service.

The invesitigation is ongoing and all evidence/reports will be submitted upon completion to the Starke County Prosecutor's Office for review.
