Winamac Parks Board creates advisory council

WINAMAC - The Winamac Parks & Recreation Board has created an advisory council composed of citizens interested in Winamac’s parks and recreation.

The council’s purpose is to study subjects and problems specified by the P&R Board and to make recommendations to the board on additional problems in need of study. The council will advise the board on these subjects as they relate to different areas and groups within the community. The council may be invited to participate in deliberations of the board but with no right to vote.

The council is presently represented by the Winamac Tree Committee, Pulaski County 4-H Fair, Northern Indiana Power from the Past, the Iris-Elm Garden Club, business, elected official, former park board, community health, and the general public. The current members are John Behny, Dave Bennett, Theresa Callaway, Stan Czech, Sandy Lucas, Steve Miller, Sherry O’Connor, Chris Smith, John Simmermaker, and David Zahrt.

Terms will be initially staggered and then be for two years.The chairman is Dave Bennett, the vice-chair Sherry O’Connor and secretary John Behney.

The Winamac Town Park System presently consists of four parks, Winamac Town Park east of Main Street, Veteran’s Memorial Park at Monticello and Washington streets, Rinehart Park at 15th and Market streets, and the newly created Winamac Town Pathway at 100 W. Main St.  

A Facebook page will be set up to communicate park programs, projects and other information of interest to the community.

Anyone interested in making donations or gifts to the park system may make their donations to the Winamac Parks & Recreation Board and may mark it for a specific park project or general fund. These donations will be considered a 501(C3) tax donation.  

Anyone who has specific ideas or concerns about the park system, may contact an Advisory Council Member.
