Record voter turnout for Indiana in 2016

INDIANAPOLIS — Of Indiana’s 4.8 million registered voters, 58 percent cast a ballot in the November general election.

According to a report from the Secretary of State’s office, that makes 2016 a record setting year with 2,807,676 Hoosiers casting a ballot, more than in 2008 and 2012.

The report, however, said this year’s voter turnout is still comparable to 2008. Only 1,690 more votes were cast this year than in 2008. The Secretary of State’s office pointed to candidates and issues as driving turnout in recent elections.

Early voting also hit a record high of 33 percent this year. In 2008, early voting was at 24 percent and in 2012, it was at 22 percent.

“Hoosiers continue to take advantage of the options counties and the state have provided to make voting easier,” Secretary Connie Lawson said in a statement.

Decatur, LaGrange and Whitley counties had the highest turnout in the state. All three reached 71 percent turnout.
