New Purdue exhibit flexes Indiana's mussels

WINAMAC - Newly arrived at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac is a dynamic, interactive Purdue University exhibit about the unsung heroes of the Tippecanoe River - freshwater mussels.

A reception to open the exhibit was held Friday evening. Special guests included State Sen. Ed Charbonneau and State Rep. Eric Gutwein.

Mussels are the heart of rivers, each pumping up to eight gallons a day.

With more than 45 species of mussels, the Tippecanoe River is home to one of the most diverse populations of freshwater mussels in the U.S., including six endangered species. Protecting mussels is critical for maintaining good water quality, healthy fish and wildlife populations and recreational use of the river.

In "H2-WOW: Protecting our water resources," visitors will learn about Indiana's water resources, fish and wildlife and what they can do to help protect our mussels and the health of our waterways. The exhibit is interactive, free and family-friendly.
