PCCF announces 2014 Lilly Scholar

One Pulaski County student has been named the recipient of a full-tuition, four-year scholarship as the Pulaski County Community Foundation 2014 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

Eric Newman will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Eric Newman, son of Marilyn and the late Ed Newman, will graduate from Winamac Community High School in June. Over his high school career, Newman has been involved in school activities including Student Council, Shakespeare Club, and Key Club; and held leadership positions as FFA vice-president, NHS vice-president, and Robotics Team Captain.

He was a member of the soccer, track, and cross-country teams. Newman has also been an active volunteer in his community, helping with the county fair, his church’s annual chicken noodle dinner, and the local food pantry to name a few.

Newman has received several honors and awards including the DAR Good Citizen award, Presidential award for service, Hoosier Boys State delegate, Distinguished Honor Roll, and the Hugh O’Brien award.

Newman has been accepted into the animal science program in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. He plans to receive his bachelor of science degree and then pursue his doctorate in veterinary medicine.

Eric stated, “I will remember to always pay it forward and never forget to pay it back; this helped me get here and it will define where I go.”

Last month, five students from the two county high schools were announced as finalists for the 2014 Lilly Scholarship. Along with Newman, they were  Andrew McKay, Courtney Boos, Bethany Brogdon and Dagny Zupin.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship is open to all Pulaski County high school seniors who will graduate with a diploma from an accredited Indiana high school and who have been accepted to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an Indiana school.

Several scholarship applications from Pulaski County students were received and considered by the PCCF Scholarship Selection Committee. Candidates are nominated following an online application and an oral interview/presentation process. Nominees are then submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for selection in accordance with the criteria and procedures consistent with applicable law and the overall goals of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program.

ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor’s degree. 143 scholarships were awarded statewide this year.
