Sadie M. Miller

August 31, 1928 to June 16, 2017

WINAMAC - Sadie M. Miller, 88, of Kewanna, (Lake Bruce), passed away at 2:30 a.m., Friday, June 16, surrounded by her family at home.

She was born Aug. 31, 1928 in Knox, to the late Elmer and Norma Heater Riggleman. She married Walter Miller on June 2, 1947 in Royal Center. He died July 9, 2001.

Survivors include: 
Roger (Deb) Miller, Kewanna, Son 
Several grandchildren and great grandchildren 
Many nieces, nephews and cousins

8 sisters and 1 brother 

Mrs. Miller was a member of First Baptist Church, Winamac. She enjoyed quilting and playing the organ.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 12 noon, Monday, June 19, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, with Pastor Mark Pilger officiating. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Monterey.

Memorial donations may be given to the family. 

David G. Swartzell

March 12, 1940 to June 17, 2017

WINAMAC - David G. Swartzell 77, of Winamac, died at 6:15 a.m., Saturday, June 17, at his home.

He was born March 12, 1940 in Winamac, to the late Robert and Esther Lavon (Bonnie) Johnson Swartzell. He married Catherine L. Lincoln on April 14, 1962 in Winamac. She died Feb. 20, 2001.

Mr. Swartzell served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Comstock. He enjoyed fishing and golfing. He also enjoyed caring for and riding his horses and playing cards. He especially enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, at the funeral home with Rev. Ed Clark officiating. Burial will be at Idle Cemetery, Francesville. The VFW and American Legion will conduct military graveside services.

Memorial donations may be given to the Salvation Army.

Mary Jane Taylor

March 9, 1924 to December 5, 2016

WINAMAC - A memorial service has been set for  Mary Jane Taylor, 92, who died Dec. 5, 2016, in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

She was born March 9, 1924 in Star City, the only child of Hubert and Sadie (Sarah) Hoesel. During World War II, she attended Indiana University. She married Ralph W. Buck of Star City. She taught first grade in Logansport at Daniel Webster for many years.

In August 1964, she was re-married to Russell A. Taylor and later moved to Aurora, Ill. where she continued to teach first grade in the West Aurora Public Schools until she retired. She and her husband retired to Savannah, Ga. in 1990 where they built a home at the Landings on Skidaway Island. In 1999, they moved to Colorado to be near their daughter, Jane Buck of Denver. Mary Jane was preceded in death by Mr. Taylor in September 2002, and is survived by her daughter.

She was a member of the AAUW, P.E.O. and the DAR. She attended Methodist churches in Star City and Logansport, Presbyterian churches in Aurora and Savannah, and Cherry Hills Community Church in Littleton.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 20, at Star City West Cemetery. In case of rain, services will be held at the Star City United Methodist Church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Star City United Methodist Church or IU Kelley School of Business Scholarship Fund.

William E. Swern

October 2, 1921 to May 18, 2017

ROCKVILLE - William E. "Bill" Swern, 95, of Rockville, passed away at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 18, at his home on his cherished family farm.

He was born Oct. 2, 1921 in Kokomo, to the late William E. and Elizabeth Riley Swern.

Survivors include one sister, Marianne Karpovich of Caro, Mich.; nieces and nephews, Paul and Kathy Gwizdala, Michael and Pam Karpovich, Chris and Julie Karpovich and Lisa Sanchez; great nieces and nephews, Roman and Brandon Karpovich, and Xandrea Muniz.

Mr. Swern attended McKinley Grade School until his family moved to Parke County in April of 1930. He attended Judson Graded and Marshall High School. He then served with the U.S. Navy during World War II; later graduating from Purdue University in 1949.

He was a district conservationist of the USDA Soil Conservation Service, retiring in 1980. He began his career with the SCS in December 1950 in Madison County and worked for a short time in Wayne County. He worked for the Soil Water and Conservation District in Hendricks County from 1966 to 1975. From 1975 to 1980 he served as RC&D coordinator with the Arrow Head Country RC&D in Northwest Indiana. While in Pulaski County, he worked with a committee that set up a recycling program and served on the board until the county took over the program.

He was a member of the Rockville First United Methodist Church and Rockville Rotary Club. During his career he received many awards and citations including, 1988 Hoosier Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society Service Award, 1988/1992 International SWCS Commendation Awards, 1990 Paul Harris Fellow Award, 1991 Parke County 4-H Leader of the Year, 1992 Commendation Award Soil and Water Conservation Society, 1993 Indianapolis Star Jefferson Award, 1999 SCCS Prestigious Honor Award, 2000 Purdue Agriculture Alumni Association Certificate of Distinction Award, 2007 NRCS Earth Team Award, 2009 Parke County SWCD Distinguished Service Award, 2009 Association of Retired Soil Conservation Service Employees Award of Outstanding Community Service. Active in community affairs, he served 15 years as the administrative secretary/treasurer for Hoosier Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society, Treasurer of Parke County Ag Day Committee, Parke County Park Board, serving two terms as trustee of Rockville First United Methodist Church, 10 years as a 4-H photography project leader, associate supervisor of Parke County SWCD and Earth Team volunteer, treasurer of Parke County Historical Society and Sycamore Trails RC&D Forestry committee.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday, May 26, at Gooch Funeral Home (112 W. Howard St., Rockville). The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., at the funeral home  with Pastor Bryan Wisdom officiating. Burial be at 3 p.m., at Spring Vale Cemetery, Lafayette.

Pauline M. Hoover

May 18 1936 to May 20, 2017

WINAMAC - Pauline Mae Hoover, 81, of Winamac, passed away at 7:10 a.m.,  Saturday, May 20, at Hickory Creek, Winamac .

She was born May 18, 1936 in Denham, to the late Creed and Margaret E. Stevenson Rose. On Nov. 14, 1953, She married William Hubert "Bill" Hoover Jr. in Winamac. He survives.

Mrs. Hoover attended the Thornhope Church and the Nazarene Church in Winamac. She was a homemaker and had worked cleaning homes for many others. She enjoyed gardening, collecting cat figurines and canning. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM p.m., Tuesday, May 23, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 24, at the funeral home with Mark Hines officiating. Burial will be at the Winamac Cemetery, Winamac. 

Jennifer L. Goodman

September 8, 1968 to May 13, 2017

WINAMAC - Jennifer L. "Jen" Goodman, 48, of Winamac, passed away at 9:35 p.m., Saturday, May 13, after bravely fighting a seven year battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

She was born Sept. 8, 1968 in Stoughton, MA to Donald and Jacqueline Waterhouse Hale.She was a 1986 graduate of Winamac Community High School. On Aug. 20, 2005, she married Patrick J. Goodman in Plymouth. He survives.

Mrs. Goodman had a strong faith in the Lord and infectious spirit. She enjoyed attending Bible study and faithfully prayed for others. She always put the well-being of others before herself, which showed in the many ways she volunteered. She was an avid supporter of Susan G. Komen events. She was both an athlete and coach for many sports over the years. She was most proud to be the coach of many cheerleading squads over the past nine years and also to be the loudest "cheerleading aunt." She enjoyed crafting, camping, running, and playing sand volleyball. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially BUNCO and hanging out with the "Peanut Gang." For the past five years, she had worked at Winamac Coil Spring which she affectionately referred to as her home away from home. Most of all she was proud to be a wife and mother. She will be dearly missed forever by her family and friends.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, at Winamac Church of the Heartland and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 18, at the church with Pastor Heath Hiatt officiating.
Burial will be at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac.

Memorial donations may be made to Community Foundation of Pulaski County for a fund in Jen's name.
