Alice J. Wamsley

April 21, 1926 to February 3, 2021

KNOX - Alice Jane Wamsley, 94, of Monterey, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3.

She was born April 21, 1926, in Goshen, to Jesse and Nellie Ermin Reed Mishler, both now deceased. She was a 1943 graduate of New Albany High School, and a 1947 graduate of Franklin College where she met her future husband, Claiborn Marshall “Clip” Wamsley. They were married Dec. 19, 1947 in Franklin. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are her children, George (Marian) Wamsley, John (Sherrill) Wamsley, Ellen (Brent) Lindvall, and Mark (Suzy) Wamsley; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death are her brothers Dale and Paul Mishler, and sisters Enda McDow and Enid Miller.

The Wamsleys moved to Monterey in 1950 where she became a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church, was a founding member of the Monterey Home Economics Club, member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Pulaski County Extension Choir. She was awarded Culver Lion's Club Citizen of the year in 2010. Mrs. Wamsley began her teaching career the year her youngest child began school in 1963, and was a home economics and art teacher for 24 years. Her leisure time was spent sewing, cooking, gardening, quilting, farming, church activities, reading, and her daily devotions. She was also known for her pies that she baked for many fundraisers.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (CT), Sunday, Feb. 7, at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. (CT), at the funeral home. Burial will be at 2 p.m. (ET), Monday, Feb. 8, at Big Cedar Cemetery in Brookville, IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested for donations to be made to Bashor Children's Home or Donor's Choice.

Elizabeth J. Kuhn Graves

March 27, 1928 to February 6, 2021

WINAMAC - Elizabeth J. “Betty” Kuhn Graves, 93, of Winamac, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

She was born March 27, 1928 in Pulaski, to the late Martin and Theresa Nies Kuhn. She was a 1946 graduate of Pulaski High School. Before marriage, she worked as a telephone operator for Indiana Bell Telephone Co. and as a bookkeeper at the Winamac Elevator. On Sept. 21, 1948, she married John E. Graves at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac. He passed away Oct. 2, 2010.

Mrs. Graves and her husband worked on the family farm for 62 years. She was a proud homemaker and was well-known for her huge garden and open kitchen. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and cooking as well as entertaining friends and family. She also enjoyed playing Euchre. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed traveling - especially when she was John’s co-pilot in the Tri Pacer. She will be dearly missed.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 15, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Daniel Shine officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Winamac.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Linda J. McNabney

August 24, 1944 to January 29, 2021

MEDARYVILLE - Linda J. McNabney, 76, of Medaryville, passed away Friday, Jan. 29,  at Franciscan Health Hospital in Rensselaer.

She was born Aug. 24, 1944 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Narlan L. and Geraldine Ruthledge Inmon. She graduated from Mooresville High School in 1962 and completed her studies at Indiana Business College. She worked as a legal secretary for several years at Ice Miller law firm. On Aug. 7, 1966 she married her high school sweetheart William R. “Bill” McNabney, in Mooresville. He survives.

Mrs. McNabney was a proud homemaker and as such, she was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was always involved in her children’s activities, and was a leader of Cass/White Post 4-H, Good News Bible Club, and Girl Scouts. She was active in the Pulaski County community and was a member of Bethel Bible Church and Aim High Extension Homemakers Club. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a talented pianist and loved the old hymns. She enjoyed cooking and baking - whether it was for her family or friends. She shared God’s grace in many ways; a meal brought to your home, a word of encouragement, or a shared prayer. She loved her family very much, especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Medaryville; and one hour prior to services Thursday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home with Pastor Don Whipple and Pastor Tom Dewlen officiating. Burial will be at White Post Cemetery in Medaryville.

Dorothy E. Patrick Coad

February 1, 1923 to January 27, 2021

WINAMAC - Dorothy Elizabeth Patrick Coad, 97, of Monterey, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, at her daughter’s home at Bass Lake.

She was born Feb. 1, 1923 in Chicago to the late Theodore and Mary Fiedler Schneider. Dorothy grew up during the Great Depression. Her family owned an eleven flat with a candy store at street level in Chicago and a peanut farm in San Pierre. When the depression hit, the family moved to San Pierre. In 1943, she married John  Joseph Patrick. John (along with his father-in-law) built a home in Hessville, IN where the couple raised three children: Mary, Peggy, and Dorothy. After John passed away in 1955, Dorothy married the late Edward Coad. The family moved to Monterey and welcomed two more children: Edward and James.

The rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 12, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Monterey. Visitation will follow from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, at the church. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., (Friday, Feb. 12), at the church. Burial will be at St. Anne’s Cemetery in Monterey.

Kenneth D. DePoy

June 29, 1929 to January 28, 2021

WINAMAC - Kenneth D. DePoy, 91, of Winamac (formerly of Hamlet), passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac.

He was born June 29, 1929 in Winamac to the late Raymond and Hazel Good DePoy. He graduated from Winamac High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Mr. DePoy was retired from Starke County Co-Op in Hamlet. He was a longtime member of Hamlet American Legion Post #356. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon, Wednesday, at the funeral home with Rev. Edward Clark officiating. Entombment with full military honors will take place at a later date at Marion National Cemetery in Marion, IN.

Nancy O'Connor O'Neill Schindler

November 10, 1929 to January 15, 2021

LAPORTE – Nancy O’Connor O’Neill Schindler, 91, passed away Friday, Jan. 15, in LaPorte.

She was born Nov. 10, 1929 on her parents’ farm in Pulaski County to the late Edward and Marie Costello O’Connor. She married John O'Neill of Chicago in 1952. He was killed in a car accident in March of 1955. She later married Ferdinand Schindler in October 1968. He also preceded her in death in 2016.

She is survived by her son, Patrick (Tam) O'Neill; four grandchildren, Emily Webster Nozawa, Madi Webster Ashour, Miles Webster, and Hannah O'Neill, and two great-grandchildren, Rose Marie Nozawa and Theodore Nozawa; all of whom reside in Colorado.

She was preceded in death by all of her siblings in birth order, Francis, Joan (Render), Richard, Ellen (Essling) Timothy, and her daughter, Mary O’Neill Webster.

Mrs. Schindler contracted polio in 1945 and walked with the aid of a leg brace and crutches until moving to a wheelchair in the last few years. While living in Indiana, she had part-time jobs with the South Bend Tribune as a reporter and as a secretary at the county welfare office. She was also active in local Democratic politics. She met Ferdinand Schindler in Winamac, and after their marriage, the couple residined in Michigan City. She wrote a column in the weekly newspaper, The Beacher for about 15 years called “The Culinary Corner,” ostensibly about recipes but mostly about her observations of life. The couple retired to Colorado Springs in 1987 to be near her children and grandchildren. Shortly after her daughter Mary passed in 2007, the Schindlers moved into an assisted living facility in Denver, where he passed in 2016.
She loved all animals. She was active in knitting, gardening, reading, writing, swimming, travel and politics.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26, at St. Peter’s Church in Winamac. A burial mass will follow at 10 a.m., at the church.
