Charlotte M. Berger

December 19, 1928 to March 22, 2023

WINAMAC - Charlotte M. Berger, 94, of Star City, passed away Wednesday, March 22, at White Oak Health Campus in Monticello.

She was born Dec. 19, 1928 in rural White County to the late Isadore V. and Gloria M. [Snow] Roth. She graduated from Royal Center High School in 1946 and attended St. Francis College in Ft. Wayne. On July 21, 1951, she married Raymond I. “Ray” Berger at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski. He passed away March 14, 2019.

Mrs. Berger was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski where she participated in the Christian Mothers Society, taught catechism, and served as church organist for nearly 20 years. She was a member of the Niteliters Home Ec Club. She enjoyed painting and writing poetry as well as music in general. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles (confidently in ink) and traveling internationally with her husband. She had the unique experience of serving as a juror during the Ford Pinto Trial. She retired from Winamac Community High School in 1998 where she had worked as an audio-visual aide. More than anything, she loved her family very much and will be deeply missed.

A scriptural wake service will be at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, and will be followed by a Christian Mother’s service. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pulaski, with Rev. Andrew DeKeyser officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery South in Pulaski.

September 25, 1938 to March 22, 2023

WINAMAC - Armel E. “Carl” Wireman, 84, of North Judson, passed away Wednesday, March 22, surround by his family at Miller’s Mary Manor in Culver.

He was born Sept. 25, 1938 in Salyersville, KY to the late Simon Sr. and Georgia [Joseph] Wireman.

Mr. Wireman worked as a carpenter for many years and enjoyed fishing well as gardening. He was a loving father to many and a friend to all who met him. He will remain forever in our hearts, until we meet again.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 28, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m., (Tuesday), at the funeral home with Rev. Pebbles Wireman M.A. officiating. Private burial will be at Mt. Zion-Franklin Twp. Cemetery in Winamac.

Phillip B. Lowery

January 7, 1965 to March 18, 2023

NORRISTOWN, PA - Phillip Bond Lowery, RPh, 58, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 18, at home from metastatic prostate cancer, with his family by his side

Born in Indianapolis, Jan. 7, 1965, he was the son of the late William and Nancy (Trosper) Lowery. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1983. He earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Butler University in 1988. He married Suzanne Gutwein on March 10, 1990. She survives.

Also surviving are children Dr. Madeleine Lowery, Drs. Andrew (Gabija) Lowery and Paulina Lowery; brothers Robert Lowery and Dr. Doug (Missy) Lowery; and parents-in-law Fredrick and Madeleine Gutwein. He was brother-in-law to Fred (Darlene) Gutwein Jr., Dr. Heidi Gutwein, David (Janine) Gutwein, Ben Gutwein, Greta (Chris) Dyer; as well as uncle to many and friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Lowery.

Mr. Lowery dedicated 35 years to Merck & Co., Inc. where he held 12 positions over the years, primarily in the vaccine division. He was a member of Lower Providence Presbyterian Church. He met his wife during their training as sale representatives. He was an energetic, driven individual who was loved by family, friends and colleagues. He enjoyed cooking and traveling, but his greatest joy in life was his family.

Relatives and friends are invited to a life celebration from 5 to 6:50 p.m., Thursday, March 23, with a memorial service at 7 p.m., all at Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Life Celebration Home of East Norriton, 200 West Germantown Pike, Norristown, PA.

An additional service will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, March 26, at Frain Mortuary, 230 S. Brooks St., Francesville. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, with burial to follow at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

William R. Maxwell

April 14, 1937 to March 16, 2023

WINAMAC - William R. “Bill” Maxwell, 85, of Winamac, passed away Thursday, March 16, at Northwest Health Hospital in LaPorte.

He was born April 14, 1937 in Gary, to William L. and Helen [Riley] Maxwell. He graduated in 1956 from Edison High School in East Gary. On Oct. 19, 1957, he married Judith D. “Judy” Wignall in East Gary. She passed away on April 9, 2012.

Mr. Maxwell lived in East Gary for 29 years before moving to Winamac in 1966. He was a former member of East Gary Volunteer Fire Department. He began working at US Steel while in high school until he moved to Winamac. He worked at Winamac Steel from 1967 until the plant closed in the mid-1990s. He then went to work at Eaton’s until his retirement in 1999. He was a former posse member of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department under his uncle (former) Sheriff George Riley. He was a member of the Winamac VFW Auxiliary Post #1728 and Winamac FOE #580. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 25, at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac, with Rev. Edward Clark officiating. Burial will follow at the cemetery..

February 8, 1934 to March 12, 2023

WINAMAC - Carl Thomas Doty, 89, of Winamac, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 12,at home.

He was born Feb. 8, 1934 to the late James and Grace [Widner] Doty. He graduated from Monterey High School. He then served in the U.S Army..On July 1, 1961, he married Frances Ellen May Smith, whom he met at a donkey basketball game. She passed away Oct. 7, 2019. They attended the Winamac Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Doty was a lifelong farmer. His passion for agriculture led him to raise livestock and develop a successful career in field tile and drainage. He was a good neighbor and a friend to many. He was witty and had a unique sense of humor. Most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 14, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 15, at the funeral home with Pastor Martin Burns officiating. Burial will be at Reed Cemetery in Winamac. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services.

Phyllis J. Johnson

July 20, 1945 to March 12, 2023

FRANCESVILLE - Phyllis June Johnson, 77, of Francesville, passed away Sunday, March 12, at her home.

She was born July 20, 1945 in Biloxi, MS to the late Luther and Kathleen [Roberson] Coomer. In 1963, she graduated from Frankfort High School in Frankfort, IN. She attended Olivet Nazarene College in Bourbonnais, IL. On Nov. 25, 1967, she married James M. Johnson in Frankfort. He survives.

Early in her career, Mrs. Johnson worked at Sealy in Rensselaer, before becoming a daycare provider in Francesville. Her medical career started at Parkview Haven Retirement Home where she worked as a QMA. She retired as an LPN after nearly 30 years of helping and caring for others. In addition to working at Parkview Haven, she also worked at several area nursing homes. She was a devoted member of the Winamac Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday school, VBS, and children’s church. For many years, she was a local Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 16, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville. Visitation will also be from 10 to 11 a.m., Friday, March 17, at Winamac Church of the Nazarene in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., (Friday), at the church with Pastor Martin Burns officiating. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m., Friday, March 17, at Roseland Cemetery in Francesville with Pastor Rodney Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the cemetery.
