Richard E. McCarty Sr.

May 18, 1959 to July 15, 2023

ROCHESTER – Richard Eugene McCarty Sr., 64, of Winamac passed away at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 15, at his residence.

On May 18, 1959, he was born in Knox to Sylvester “Tubby” and Kathryn Rose McCarty. He married Karen Campbell on Oct. 10, 1987. They shared 36 years of life’s adventures with their blended family. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters Evelyn (Jason) Dell Jason of Rochester, Katy Batta of Argos, Dottie Batta and companion Kimberly Dunsizer of Plymouth; three sons Richard (Tori) McCarty Jr. of Rochester, Justin McCarty of Bremen, Dustin (Kristen) McCarty of Peru; 14 grandchildren Brody Stone, Kyndra Stone, Jaslyn Dell, Dreyton Dell, Makayla Batta, Damien Keeling, Parker Keeling, Keltinn Gentry-McCarty, Dustin James McCarty Jr., KayLea McCarty, Jaxton Tillman, Karlie Tillman, Alaynah Tillman, and Jared Tillman; great-granddaughter Kayleigh Marie; and a brother, Joe McCarty of Rochester.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Sylvester McCarty and Kathryn Tilley, and infant grandson Jacob Ehlinger.

With a strong work ethic, Mr. McCarty worked at Federal Mogul of Leiters Ford and at Plymouth Tube of Winamac. He liked to play cards, whether it was euchre, pinochle, back alley or poker. He enjoyed playing slots and traveling to the Four Winds Casinos  in South Bend, New Buffalo and the Sevenwinds Casino in Hayward, WI.  As a diehard Cub’s fan, he loved to share the Seventh Inning Stretch and the number of home runs per inning with his family.

A celebration of the life will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 20, at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Pastor Thad Stewart will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 19, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Visitors are invited to wear their favorite Cub’s attire to honor Rick. Interment will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Rose A. Newman Korner

February 15, 1928 to July 15, 2023

ROYAL CENTER - Rose A. Korner, 95, of Winamac passed away peacefully at 6:24 a.m., Saturday, July 15, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born Feb. 15, 1928 in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Helen (Winiarz) Storzek. She was married to D. Richard Newman and Robert C. Korner, who both preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, David (Jean) Newman of Winamac, Alan Newman of Winamac, Sharon (Douglas) McKinley of Winamac and Linda (Bill) Webb of Winamac; step-children, Sherry (Mark) Stout of Star City and Kathy (Kirk) Good of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Joshua (Robyn) Newman of Cleveland, Ohio, Blake Newman of Winamac, Abby (Luke) Anspach of Star City, Emily Newman of Indianapolis, Ashley (John) Diveley of Star City, Brooke (David) Browning of Star City, Chelsea (Clint) Maxwell of Carmel, Cody (Stephanie) McKinley of West Point, Aaron (Amber) McKinley of Winamac, Jake McKinley of Speedway, Joel Webb of Star City and Tucker Webb of Star City; and step-grandchildren, Ryan Stout, Sean Stout and Carl Manikowski. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren and her beloved cat Kitty.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Lottie Chytla.

Mrs. Korner began her career in accounting at Ryerson Steel in Chicago. While living on the farm, she not only raised her four children (not an easy task), but worked ground, hauled grain and made sure there were delicious meals on the table. She ended her career in the office at the Sohigro fertilizer plant in Star City. She gave of her time helping others, especially her kids, as a Cub Scout den mother, religious education teacher, taxi driver, church volunteer and most recently working the gift shop at the hospital. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, playing euchre, fishing, golfing, painting, creating personalized greeting cards, photography and any and all adventures. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Those who had the privilege to know her would say she was kind, witty and generous.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 18, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Winamac, where there will also be a scripture service at 3 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 19, at the church. Burial will be at the Winamac Cemetery, McKinley Addition.

Memorial donations may be made to Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Pulaski Health Foundation or charity of choice.

Judy K. Marcinkowski

December 20, 1944 to July 14, 2023

WINAMAC - Judy Kay Marcinkowski, 78, of Winamac, passed away Friday, July 14, at Northwest Health Porter Hospital in Valparaiso.

She was born Dec. 20, 1944 in Logansport, to the late Russell Dale and Genevieve Opal [Reinholt] Watts. On Oct. 20, 1989, she married Edward L. “Ed” Marcinkowski Jr. He passed away Jan. 4, 2022.

Mrs. Marcinkowski worked at Wilson Foods in Logansport for many years. Later, she and Mr. Marcinkowski owned and operated a bait shop in LaCrosse. They were both members of Lake County Coon Hunters Association and raised coon dogs. She enjoyed cooking and fishing. She especially enjoyed going to the races at Shady Hill. More than anything, she loved her family very much, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Wednesday, July 19, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 12 noon (Wednesday), at the funeral home with Youth Pastor Romeo Marcinkowski officiating. Private burial will be at Riverbank Cemetery in Monterey.

Penny S. Bickham Willing

February 28, 1960 to July 9, 2023

WINAMAC - Penny Sue Bickham Willing, 63, of North Judson (formerly of Rochester and Winamac), passed away Sunday, July 9, at her residence, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.

She was born Feb. 28, 1960 in Hammond, to the late Clifford and Jacqueline Hart Bickham.

Mrs. Willing was an registered nurse and had worked at Pulaski Memorial Hospital and at St. Joseph Hospital in Plymouth. She was a member of the Church of the Heartland in Rochester. She was deeply committed to her faith in God which helped her through tough times. She enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with her friends and at church. She enjoyed caring for family, friends and her patients. She was an artist who enjoyed painting. She enjoyed decorating her homes and would buy homes, rehab them and flip them. She also enjoyed working in her yard. She cared deeply for those in need and was free with whatever help she could give them. She was the “community mom” welcoming all in the neighborhood. Friends and former patients will remember her caring counsel and special attention. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and will be deeply missed by all who loved her.

WINAMAC - Ruby May DeWeese, 69, of Monticello, passed away at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafatette, Thursday, July 6.

She was born Aug. 11, 1953 in Rensselaer to Jerry and Virginia Davis Thompson.

Mrs. DeWeese had worked as a CNA and QMA at nursing homes, hospitals and in home health care. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a hard worker. She was kind and generous. She would take in any stray human or animal. She liked to be needed. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her dogs. .

Norma Jean Miller

March 15 1936 to July 5, 2023

Norma Jean Miller, 87, of Lucerne passed away at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 5, at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne.

Born March 15, 1936 in McLean County, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Donald and Laura (Phillips) Cohagan. She was a Grass Creek High School graduate. On Sept. 4, 1955 she married Walter “Bus” Miller.  He preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1993.

Survivors include her daughters, Pamela (Sammy) Jones of Star City and Susan K. (Kevin Stolze) Loftain of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Josh Jones of Star City, Christy (Craig) Coon of Kewanna, Kipp (Ashley) Long of Winamac, Evan (Megan) Long of Lucerne, Ryan (Leah) Jones of New Palestine and Amy Jo Jones of Indianapolis; and great-grandchildren, Kamden Long, Kane Long, Avery Long, Lindsey Coon, Lucas Coon, Katelyn Coon, Reagan Coon, Tucker Long, Teagan Long, Callie Long, Ralph Jones, Lucille Jones, James Jones and Walter Jones.

Known as a hard worker, Mrs. Miller worked alongside her husband on the farm for many years and was formerly employed at Community State Bank in Royal Center.  She also worked in the cafeteria at Caston High School and as a mail carrier. She was an active member of multiple churches throughout her life, and a loving dog owner. She also enjoyed golfing, bowling, and square dancing. She will be remembered most for her active involvement and love for her family, serving as an enthusiastic supporter and frequent sports spectator.  

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 9, at Rans Funeral Homes & Crematory, Harrison Chapel, Royal Center. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 10, at the funeral home with Pastor Dirk Raderstorf officiating. Burial will be at Grass Creek Cemetery.

William E. Hattabaugh

August 27, 1940 to July 4, 2023

FRANCESVILLE - William E. “Bill” Hattabaugh, 82, of Rensselaer (formerly of Francesville), passed away at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 4, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Rensselaer.

He was born Aug. 27, 1940 in Lafayette, to the late William N. and Esther [Ballard] Hattabaugh.

Mr. Hattabaugh worked as a farmhand for Wuethrich farms for many years and also worked a short time at Talberts. He enjoyed participating in local festivals and parades as well as local car and truck shows. People loved his funny cars. He also enjoyed attending stock car races and building model cars. He was an avid reader of Hot Rod magazine. The later years of Bill’s life were spent at Rensselaer Care Center where he played the mandolin and loved singing. He enjoyed being social with the residents and staff there. He will be remembered as a terrific story teller who also enjoyed making people laugh.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville. Private burial will be at Osborne Cemetery in Rensselaer.
