John Garbas

May 30, 1951 to May 19, 2011

WINAMAC - John Martin Garbas, 59, of Winamac, passed away at 6:44 a.m., Thursday, May 19, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

He was born May 30, 1951, in Chicago, to the late John and Gladys Frye Garbas.

Mr. Garbas worked for Tippecanoe Beverage in Winamac, for several years.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m., Monday, at  Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., (Monday, May 30), at the funeral home. A private burail will be in Bass Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Bass Lake.

Robert C. Korner

December 31, 1921 to May 21, 2011

WINAMAC - Robert C. Korner, 89, of Winamac, passed away at 9:36 p.m., Saturday, May 21, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Indianapolis.

He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Star City, to the late Harry and Johanna Mulvaney Korner. He married Mary Margaret McClure on April 4, 1948 in Star City. She died on May 20, 1984. He married Rose Storzek Newman on June 21, 1985 in Winamac. She survives.

He was preceded in death by:

Mr. Korner served aboard a submarine in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Winamac. He was a member of the VFW Post 1728 in Winamac and the FOE in Winamac. He served on the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board from 1984-2000. He served on the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Board and was a member of the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxillary. He was a frequent volunteer at the hospital registration desk.

Mr. Korner was the manager at J.I. Case Implement dealership in Winamac, Logansport and Princeton for many years. He also worked as district manager for the Case Co.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A scriptural wake service will be  at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday (May 25), at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Winamac, with Rev. Martin Sandhage officiating. Burial will be in Star City West Cemetery, Star City. The American Legion and the VFW will conduct military graveside services.

Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor's choice. 

Arnold L. Bonnell

March 31, 1933 to May 20, 2011

WINAMAC - Arnold Lee Bonnell, 78, Mishawaka, passed away at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 20, at his residence.

He was born March 31, 1933, in Stockbridge, MI to the late Serin and Bertha Marvin Bonnell. He married Florine L. Archer on Dec. 9, 1950, in Francesville. She survives.

Mr. Bonnell was a retired iron worker and was a member of Local 292 Iron Workers Union. He was a former Scout Master and was a little league baseball coach.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral Service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday (May 26), at the funeral home with Leonard Allen officiating. Burial will be in Star City West Cemetery, Star City.

Mona M. Bane

June 11, 1940 to May 19, 2011

WINAMAC - Mona Maydell Bane, 70, Winamac, passed away at 5:38 p.m., Thursday, May 19, at her residence.

She was born June 11, 1940, in Pineland, TX, to Robert and Opal Craig Brown. She married Lee Edward Kelley in 1956 in Crown Point. He passed away March 1978. She was married on Oct. 10, 1986, in Hobart, to Lester L. Bane. He survives.

Betty L. Burgess

August 9, 1926 to May 18, 2011

WINAMAC - Betty L. Burgess, 84, Winamac, died 6:33 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 9, 1926, in Star City  to the late James I. and Opal Bernice Fry Marquis. She married Orval W. Burgess on June 16, 1946, in Winamac. He passed away on Jan. 15, 2006.

Mrs. Burgess was a graduate of Star City High School in 1944. She was a former teller for St. Joseph Bank, South Bend, during World War II. She also had been employed at Miller's Department Store, Winamac, and had been a teller at First Union Bank and Trust, Winamac. She was a deputy Pulaski County Clerk under Clerk Richard Dodd. She then was the court secretary for Judge Harold Staffeldt. For many years she served as a legal secretary for Jack Richert. She last served as the church secretary for the Winamac Church of the Nazerene under Pastor Steve Gladding.

Mrs. Burgess was the past president of the Pulaski County Geneological Society and was a member of the Pulaski County Historical Society. She served as treasurer of the Old Star City Cemetery Association. She and her husband enjoyed their retirement time at their lake home in Spooner, WI.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday,  at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. a celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday (May 23), at the funeral home with Rev. Daniel W. Burgess and Chaplain Jason See officiating. Burial will be in Star City West Cemetery, Star City.

Memorial donations may be given to the Hope Hospice of Fulton County.

Brenda G. Christensen

March 23, 1939 to May 17, 2011

WINAMAC - Brenda Gail Christensen, 72, of Winamac, passed away at 12:09 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

She was born March 23, 1939, in Springfield, OH, to the late Joseph and Ruth McDaniel Trace. She married Dale E. Christensen on Sept.  6, 1958, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He died Sept. 11, 2010.

Mrs. Christensen graduated from Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, OH in 1957. She was homecoming queen in 1956. That same year that she traveled to Culver, IN for the first time. She later owned a lake home in Culver. She attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where she met her husband. She was a homemaker in Palatine, IL where she raised her four children and was actively involved with community youth sports and the PTO.

She and her husband relocated to Winamac in 1980. She was actively involved in the parent advisory committee at Eastern Pulaski Schools. She was a former president of the Iris Elm Garden Club. She was a member of the DAR. She had served as president of the Colonial Dames Chapter 17. An avid seamstress and quilter throughout her life, she was a member of the Suzanna Circle Quilters Club.

Friends may call after 11 a.m., Friday, at First Christian Church, Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., (Friday, May 20), at the church, with Pastor Rick Abbott and Pastor Denny Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Culver Masonic Cemetery, Culver.

Memorial donations may be given to the Culver Methodist Church or the First Christian Church.

Clifford Woodard Jr.

August 23, 1952 to May 14, 2011

MEDARYVILLE - Clifford J. Woodard Jr., 58, Medaryville, passed away at 5:20 a.m.,Saturday, May 14, at St. Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point.

He was born Aug. 23, 1952, in Gary, to the late Clifford J. and Christine Allen Woodard.

Mr. Woodard was a lifelong resident of Medaryville. He worked for LTV and US Steel for 35 years. He was currently employed at Talbert Manufacturing in Rensselaer. He was a member of the White Post Township Fire Department for 20 years, and was a member of the Medaryville American Legion.
