Helen M. Overmyer

December 20, 1923 to July 25, 2011

FRANCESVILLE - Helen M. Overmyer, 87, of Francesville, passed away at 8:35 a.m., Monday, July 25, at Bickford Senior Living, Lafayette.

She was born Dec. 20, 1923, in Wolcott to the late William and Bessie Lockenour Farney. She married First Lt. Richard C. Overmyer on April 9, 1944 (Easter Sunday), in the First Christian Church, Francesville. Rev. Chester Parker officiated. Her husband passed away on Oct. 24, 1991.

Mrs. Overmyer graduated from Francesville High School in 1942. While her father served as Pulaski County Auditor, she served as a Deputy Auditor. In 1963 she became the bookkeeper at Francesville Drain Tile and was the co-owner with her husband. She remained president of the company until 2006. She was a very active member of the First Christian Church where she served in a number of positions over the years.

Helen and Richard enjoyed traveling all over the world together. She also enjoyed her time spent in Sarasota, FL. Among her favorites things were family gatherings and crossword puzzles. She loved to garden and home cook.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville, and one hour prior to the service at the church. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday (July 29), at First Christian Church, Francesville, with Pastor James Ketchen officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorial donations may be given to the Francesville First Christian Church, Bickford Senior Living, or Guardian Angels Hospice.

Barbara Jean Sego

October 7, 1937 to July 13, 2011

LAFAYETTE - Barbara Jean Hatfield Sego, 73, Lafayette, died on Wednesday, July 13, at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital.

Born on October 7, 1937 in Winamac, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes Jordan Hatfield. She married Larry I. Hamilton and he preceded her in death. She married Robert E. Sego, Sr. on Jan. 4, 1992 and he survives.

Also surviving is a son, James I. Hamilton (Jilaine) of Panama City Beach, FL; a daughter, Rebecca K. Lawson (Glenn) of Wingate; a step-son, Robert Sego, Jr. of Lafayette; four step-daughters, Paula Leill (John) of Lafayette, Debra Sego-Castenda of Elk Grove, CA, Karen Moore (Dean) of Frankfort, and Cindy Yates (Steve) of Lafayette; and a sister, Mary Rife of Winamac. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Amber Pierce and Anthony Hamilton.

Mrs. Sego was a 1955 graduate of Winamac High School and a graduate of St. Elizabeth Nursing School. She was a registered nurse in obstetrics at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 27 years. She retired in 1997. She was a member of St. Elizabeth alumni and enjoyed meeting with the St. Elizabeth OB Breakfast Retirement Group, sewing and gardening.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Hippensteel Funeral Home, Lafayette. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday (July 16), at Wea Ridge Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Sager officiating. Burial will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wea Ridge Baptist Church.

Gloria M. Staddon

December 23, 1925 to July 12, 2011

AKRON, COLO. - Gloria M. Staddon, 85, formerly of Pulaski, died Tuesday, July 12, at the Washington County Nursing Home in Akron, Colo.

She was born Dec. 23, 1925, in South Bend, the daughter of the late John M. and Hazel L. Engels. She was married to George W. Staddon on Sept. 13, 1946. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sister, Pauline Field; two sisters-in-law, Jane Kurtti, Perham, Minn., and Elsie Hendrickson,  Berry, Ky.; her daughter, Carol and son-in-law, Joseph Benjamin, Akron, Colo.; grandson, Thomas (Bridget) Chaney, Fort Collins, Colo.; granddaughter, Tina (Todd) Bertels Sr., Huntington Beach, Calif.; and grandson, Timothy (Sarah) Chaney, Attleboro, Mass.; and great-grandchildren, Aimee Chaney, Justin Chaney, Todd Bertels Jr., Christopher Bertels and Milan Chaney. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Harold Field, Twelve Mile; and her son-in-law, Arthur Chaney, Fort Collins, Colo.

Mrs. Staddon went to school and graduated from Pulaski High School in 1944. She was an active 4-H member and member of the school band. After her husband completed his his military duty, the couple started farming a half-mile from her childhood home. She was a homemaker, a member of Home Economics Club, and a 4-H leader for many years. She was active with Pulaski Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, played piano for services and served as a church elder. She was an avid quilter with the church quilting group. She went to work outside of the home when her daughter finished high school as a meat packaging inspector for Tee-Pak, Inc. in Winamac. She retired in 1978 to take care of her aging parents.

Mrs. Staddon moved to Akron, Colo., in November 1999 to be close to her daughter. She became active in the First Presbyterian Church in Akron. She joined Antelope Springs FCE club and was recognized for her contributions as the Washington County North Star Award winner and as Colorado FCE Member of the Year in 2011. She loved her second home in Akron, and she enjoyed new friends that she made at FCE club, at MeetandEat and at church.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday (July 16), at the First Presbyterian Church of Akron.

Memorial donations may be made to Mobile Meals of Akron or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Frances M. Thomas

April 14, 1916 to July 20, 2011

WINAMAC - Frances M. Thomas, 95, Winamac, died at 6:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, at her residence.

She was born April 14, 1916, at Bass Lake to the late James and Edna Borgenson Lausten. She married Lewis J. Thomas in January 1969 in Knox. He survives.

Mrs. Thomas graduated from Southern Missionary College in Tennessee. She was a registered nurse, having worked at Sloan Kettering Hospital in Ohio when it first opened. She was a member of the Community Seventh Day Adventist Church in Monterey. She enjoyed cooking.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday, at Community Seventh Day Adventist Church, Monterey. A memorial service will follow at 12 noon (Monday, July 25), at the church with Pastor Don English and Pastor Bryce Bowman officiating. Burial will be in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac.

Hilda H. Beiswanger

July 29, 1916 to July 16, 2011

FRANCESVILLE - Hilda H. Beiswanger, 94, of Francesville, passed away at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer.

She was born July 29, 1916, in Francesville, to the late Jacob and Lizzie Wendt Malchow. She married Alfred Beiswanger on Sept. 7, 1931 in Francesville. He died on April 4, 1998. Hilda and Alfred had been married for 66 years.

Mrs. Beiswanger was a member of the St. James-Salem United Church of Christ in Francesville where she played the organ and piano for over 75 years. 
She had worked at the local grocery store for over 52 years before retiring in 2001. Hilda enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens as well as baking cookies for her family.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday (July 20), at the funeral home with Pastor David Jennys officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Ellen Norman

November 29, 1919 to July 15, 2011

FRANCESVILLE - M. Ellen Norman, 92, of Valparaiso, formerly of Monon, passed away at 3:28 p.m., Friday, July 15, at Whispering Pines Health Care Center, Valparaiso.

She was born Nov. 29, 1918, in Fowler, to the late Edward and Ellen Snavely Nightingale. She married Eldo Norman who died in July of 1976.

Mrs. Norman was a member of the United Methodist Church in Monon. She was a former server at the Southside Cafe in Monon. She also cleaned several office spaces in Monon for many years. She had worked as a caretaker for the elderly. She took in washing and ironing for her friends and neighbors until the age of 88. She ran a catering service in Monon for several years. She was a former Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning and caring for others.

Friends may call after 10 a.m., Thursday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel-Francesville. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m., Thursday (July 21), at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Birch officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Gilboa Cemetery, Fowler.

K. Edwin Applegate

July 21, 1923 to July 9, 2011

BLOOMINGTON - K. Edwin Applegate, 87, Bloomington, died Saturday, July 9.

He was born July 21, 1923, the son of the late Karl and Gladys Applegate. He married Betty Dilts of Winamac in 1944. She survives.

Also surviving are his sister Virginia Baumgartner, son  Raymond Applegate (Rachel) of Texas; son Bob Applegate (Vicki) of Wisconsin and daughter Beth Applegate (Trish Kerle); of Bloomington. He also is survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by son Eric Applegate.

For more than 65 years, Mr. Applegate was a committed leader and public servant to the State of Indiana and to his country. Upon recovering from wounds he sustained in France during World War II, he earned an undergraduate degree in business management at Indiana University in 1946 and a law degree from the Maurer School of Law in 1948. He opened his first law firm in Bloomington in 1949 and retired from Applegate, McDonald and Associates in 2011. 

Mr. Applegate had a distinguished record of public service, serving from 1951-1958 as U.S. Commissioner, Southern District of Indiana; from 1958-1965 as Deputy Prosecutor for Monroe County and Municipal Judge for Bloomington; and in 1965 as a representative in the Indiana General Assembly, where he was primary author of the bill that established Ivy Tech Bloomington's first Community College. In 1967, President Lyndon Johnson nominated him as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, a position he held until 1970. 

Mr. Applegate was an active civic leader, including serving as president of the IU Varsity Club and on numerous boards of directors in Bloomington and Monroe County.  He was also active in Knights Templar and Freemasons. He was active in the local lodge number 22 for over three decades, also serving in 1973 as the Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Honorary 33rd Degree, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, and in 1976 as the Department Commander for the East Central Department of the Grand Encampment of the Knights Templar of the United States. He received many awards throughout his decades of service, including being selected by Governor Evan Bayh in 1992 for the Outstanding Government and Civic Service Award and, in 1999, for the Indiana Bar Foundation's Distinguished Service Award for 50 years of service. In 2011, Mr. Applegate was inducted into the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows from the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University. Induction into the Academy represents the highest honor the School bestows on alumni. Fellows have distinguished themselves in their chosen career fields and have continued to enhance the national reputation of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law through their personal achievements and dedication to the highest standards of their profession.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m.,Thursday, at Allen Funeral Home (4155 S. Old State Road 37), Bloomington. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday (July 15), at the First Methodist Church on the corner of 4th Street and Washington Street, Bloomington. His body will be cremated and his remains will be placed in the First Methodist Church, Columbarium where his eldest son Eric also rests in peace.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Ed and Eric Applegate to the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, Morrison 313 / 1165 E. 3rd Street, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405.
