Fafalene "Fluff" Howard Jenkins

September 20, 1937 to February 21, 2024

ROYAL CENTER - Fafalene “Fluff” Howard Jenkins, 86, of Winamac passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21st, at Pulaski Healthcare Center.

She was born Sept. 20, 1937 to the late Homer and Edna Mae Howard. On April 29, 1972 she married William T. Jenkins. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 2024.

Survivors include her children Susan (Jeff) Foust of Rochester, Mark (Diane) Kolish of Winamac, daughter-in-law, Linda Kolish of Winamac, Melissa (Josh) Behny of Fishers; sister Iva Jean Minix, brother Roger (Phyllis) Howard, sister Sharon (Jim) Baker, sister-in-law Donna Howard; grandchildren Chad (Monica) Kolish of Winamac, Beth Kolish of Winamac, Ryan (Lindsey) Kolish of Winamac, Austin (Emily) Foust of Rochester, Matthew (Laura) Kolish of Winamac, Jordan (Jess Bank) Kolish of Winamac, Kaitlin Foust of South Bend, Finian Behny of Fishers and Cameron Behny of Fishers; and great-grandchildren Jackson, Sawyer, Charlotte, Cale and Ava Kolish and Zander, Rowan and Cason Foust. 

She was preceded in death by sons William Kolish and Kevin Kolish, grandson Liam Behny, brothers Clifton Howard, Fred Howard and Justin Howard, sisters Joyce Sallee, Carolyn Minix, and Mandy Howard. 

Mrs. Jenkins had a love for adventure. As a young girl, she took trips to Chicago on the train by herself, and as an adult she traveled across Europe with the Sounds of Hope Mission. She often went to Fanfare for concerts, sporting events to watch her beloved Chicago Cubs and interesting landmarks across the U.S. She was a voracious reader and a closet romantic. She could be found curled up in a chair at any hour of the day reading a romance novel, watching the Hallmark Channel or Days of our Lives or blasting Newsmax. She was always in motion. She loved traveling, shopping and socializing. She enjoyed helping out where she could and volunteered with many organizations over the years. Recently she could be found at the front desk at the hospital signing people in. She even volunteered while wintering in Lake Placid, Fla. at the Salvation Army and Manna Mission. The most important thing to Fluff was her family. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with single-minded devotion. She was your fiercest supporter, your loudest cheerleader, your warm embrace, the squeeze on the arm when you needed it. She tried to make every event and if she couldn’t, she listened on the radio or wanted to see pictures. She was a baked good or an attentive ear over a sacred kitchen table, the miracle worker with laundry, the costume maker and the “patcher of all things holey.” She was a treasure and will be treasured always.

A celebration of life service will be at 11a.m., Saturday, March 9 at Celebration Station (opera house) Winamac, with Pastor Heath Hyatt officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.

Lena S. Hopfinger

May 13, 1943 to February 20, 2024

WINAMAC - Lena Sue “Hoppie” Hopfinger, 80, of Winamac, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

She was born May 13, 1943 in East St. Louis, IL to John Alvin and Margaret Levina [Kelley] O’Harrow. She attended Lewis & Clark High School where she met her future husband, Paul Hopfinger, in 1956. The couple wed on Feb. 18, 1994.

Mrs. Hopfinger worked as a machine operator at Eaton Controls in Winamac for 17 years until its closing. She then found employment as a correctional officer at the Indiana State Juvenile Correctional Facility in Logansport - retiring in 2007. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac, as well as Victorian Ladies of the Knights of Columbus. She was also a member of Winamac FOE #2580 Auxiliary and Razzle Dazzle Red Hats. She enjoyed volunteering at Pulaski Memorial Hospital and participating in TOPS. She was an avid BINGO player and longtime bowler. She loved her family dearly and cherished numerous travels with those she loved. She was incredibly proud of her family members who had served or were serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Private burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Winamac.

Mary E. Swartzell

July 9, 1939 to February 20, 2024

WINAMAC - Mary E. Swartzell, 84, of Winamac, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

She was born July 9, 1939 in Winamac to the late Joseph J. Sr. and Agnes G. [Braun] Nicolas. She graduated from Winamac High School in 1958, and married Donald R. Swartzell on July 5, 1958. He passed away Dec. 31, 2012.

Mrs. Swartzell was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Ladies of Charity. She enjoyed gardening and making crafts. She sold Stanley Home Products and made woven rugs for many years. Most of all, she was a devoted wife and mother who doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A private graveside service will be held at Reed Cemetery in Winamac, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. Burial will be at the cemetery.

Barbara A. Hurlburt

November 21, 1955 to February 16, 2024

WINAMAC - Barbara Ann Hurlburt, 68, of Winamac, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac.

She was born Nov. 21, 1955 in Hobart, to the late William F. and Virginia P. [Nolan] Mills. She grew up in Hobart and graduated from River Forest High School. She married Lester Alvin Hurlburt Sr. on June 23, 1984 in Winamac. He passed away May 14, 2012.

Mrs. Hurlburt was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, and was formerly a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was faithful to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and prayerful that it would lead others to the Lord. She served in various local ministries. She was a youth leader for the church Awana group and was dedicated to clowning and puppeteering. She enjoyed crocheting, completing a variety of projects which were always for the benefit of others. She encouraged others through positive notes she wrote, specifically the staff and residents of the nursing home. Most of all, she loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. (Thursday), at the funeral home with Pastor Ryan Eaton officiating. Private burial will be at Winamac Cemetery (Town Addition) in Winamac.

Memorial donations may be made to the funeral home to assist the family with final expenses.

Harry L. Cannon

July 1, 1946 to February 9, 2024

WINAMAC - Harry Lee Cannon, 77, of Winamac, lost his eight-year battle with cancer Friday, Feb. 9. He passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side.

He was born July 1, 1946 in Monterey to the late Harry Ward and Blanche Bertha [Forsythe] Cannon. He married Linda F. Spurlock on July 6, 1990, in Powell County, KY. She survives.

Mr. Cannon grew up in Monterey where he attended Monterey High School before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served almost two years in Augsberg, Germany where he successfully completed a cook’s course conducted by the 7th Army Support Command. He received an honorable discharge in 1967 with the rank of SP4(T) and was transferred to the USAR. In 1976, he reenlisted and served one year in the Indiana Army National Guard. In 1969, he began working at Thermo Products in North Judson where he mastered many jobs over his 38-year career. He had many hobbies, which included drawing cartoons and sketching as well as painting his various works of art. If he was not working on his art, he could be found tinkering on his car. He had a great sense of humor and loved bringing laughter to others. He was kind-hearted and always willing to help those in need. He dearly enjoyed the annual family reunion at the Winamac Park. He liked taking drives through the park around the horseshoe to check out the river. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home with Rev. Jarrel Hartle officiating. Burial will be at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac. The VFW and American Legion will conduct military graveside services.

Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Winamac: Park Fund.

Marlene M. Fox

March 30, 1955 to February 7, 2024

WINAMAC - Marlene May Fox, 68, of Winamac, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Northwest Health Hospital in LaPorte.

She was born March 30, 1955 in Winamac to the late Gerald M. “Red” and Myrna L. [Poss] Terry. She graduated from Winamac Community High School in 1973. On Sept. 18, 2004, she married Fran Fox at their home. He survives.

Mrs. Fox had previously worked at Paragon and Winamac Coil Spring. For the past 14 years, she proudly taught Silver Sneakers at the Community Wellness Center. She was an active member of the Winamac VFW Auxiliary Post #1728 and Winamac FOE #2580. She enjoyed gardening and canning. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the funeral home with Pastor Butch Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion-Franklin Twp. Cemetery in Winamac.
