August 6, 1939 to October 5, 2023

MONON - Betty L. “Peanut” Sams, 84, of Francesville, passed away peacefully at 10:10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 5, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 6, 1939, in Monon, to the late Herbert and Reba (Jones) Melton and was a 1959 graduate of Monon High School. Her marriage was to Hughie A. Sams on May 6, 1960, at the First Christian Church of Monon.

Surviving with her husband is a daughter Becky Haring of Medaryville; a son Mark Sams of Francesville; three sisters Ruthie Burks of Monon, Susie Melton of Monon and Jane (John) Garver of Monticello; and a brother Luther (Kathy) Melton of Monon.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Nick (Adrienne) Vollmer, Lindley (Adam) Winans and Caity (James) Robinson; and her great-grandchildren Ben, Lucy, Adeline, Graham, Parker and Kendall.

She is preceded in death by four brothers Don, Kenneth “Bud”, James and Thomas, and a sister Marge.

Mrs. Sams was a wonderful homemaker and mother. She also was a farmer's wife helping with anything needed, including driving the tractor and combine. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church of Francesville. She found the most joy in caring for her family – chauffeuring grandkids to sporting events, being everyone’s biggest sideline cheerleader, and making her signature “maccy cheese.” She and Hughie had 63 years of love, lots of laughter, and unforgettable memories. Their back-and-forth banter was an unrivaled part of their one-of-a-kind love. Her spunk and sass will be so missed by all who knew her. She was especially grateful to have visited with family and close friends in her final days. Those moments will be forever cherished by her family, as we know how much each of you meant to our sweet Peanut. We take comfort in an overwhelming sense of peace, knowing she’s walking hand in hand with her Heavenly Father.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at Clapper Family Funeral Home of Monon with Rev. Alvin Smith officiating.  Interment will follow at Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorials may be made in to Cure SMA in honor of her grandson, Graham.
