The Pulaski County Economic Development (PCED) Commission learned about a New Market Tax Credit program and the possible development of a railroad linkage through northwest Indiana at its August meeting, conducted in Monterey. The PCED also discussed the future of the welding class program in the county, and interest in developing a Main Street program. WINAMAC - The enrollment at Eastern Pulaski Community Schools is down by 14 students in the new school year the school board learned at its August meeting. Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman reported that over the last two years 127 students have transferred into the Winamac schools, with 44 this year — a tribute to the school system — but with the number of in-district families moving out of the district for various reasons, the enrollment is down by 14 students from last year. One in 30 baby boomers – the generation born from 1945 through 1965 – has been infected with hepatitis C, and most don’t know it. Hepatitis C causes serious liver diseases, including liver cancer (the fastest-rising cause of cancer-related deaths) and is the leading cause of liver transplants in the U.S.

Guest column by State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) It probably comes as no surprise to Hoosiers that agriculture is a critical part of our state’s economic future. Agriculture is a $26 billion industry in Indiana, employing 18 percent of our workforce. More than 15 million acres of our state are reserved for farmland. Earlier this month, I met with several agricultural leaders and fellow colleagues at the Indiana General Assembly’s Rural Caucus meeting to hear an update on both the crop and livestock industries.
