Adam Deitrich is one of those talented individuals chosen as a 2011 summer field sales intern, and the only intern in the nation for Hubner Seed. He is from Winamac, and will enter his senior year at Purdue University in the fall. Deitrich said many of the things he learned in his college courses have already come in handy during his internship.
“During this internship I get to work in the field and make recommendations to growers, so my experience with agronomy has proved to be very useful,” Deitrich said.
Deitrich is based in Champaign, Ill., for his internship and his territory spans from Champaign to West Lafayette.
“I like my territory,” Deitrich said. “It allows me to travel between Champaign and western Indiana. I’m not too far from home, so if I want to pack a bag and head home for the weekend, I can.”
Deitrich will spend the summer learning how to build strong sales skills and relationships with customers. Deitrich will be expected to complete several different projects during his time with Hubner. He will run a market analysis for his assigned territory and a survey of grower attitudes toward new technology. To complete this task, Deitrich will make a minimum of two visits to at least 40 growers during the 12-week internship. Additionally, he will participate in a team project. Team projects can include responsibility for a seed test plot, or planning a field day to demonstrate new technology.
“The team project is my favorite,” Deitrich said. “I’ve been working on a corn nematode research project and have been going out into the fields to collect soil and plant samples.”
“Agriculture is going through an exciting time, and these young people will be presented with one of the greatest opportunities and challenges ever – feeding a hungry planet.” said Whitney.
More than 70 percent of Monsanto territory sales managers start out in the intern program, higher than the industry average. The internship program runs from May 23 to Aug.10-12. The Monsanto summer intern program has been active for more than a decade.
