Police were told Allen left his residence earlier in the day, between 11a.m. and 1p.m., on the four-wheeler with his three-year-old son. Allen's family told police they had been unable to make contact with him, and limited additional information was available.
Indiana DNR officers also reported that Allen and the child were last observed around noon, and there were concerns that "they may have crashed in an unknown area."
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of multiple agencies to assist with the search and rescue effort. The search efforts concentrated on a large area of northern Pulaski County from the Denham area east to U.S. 35, north of Winamac. The search area encompassed some of the marshy areas of Franklin Township which includes the Winamac Fish & Wildlife Area and the Tippecanoe River State Park
Eventually, Pulaski County Communications was able to retrieve an approximate location for Allen using cellular telephone provider information.
IDNR and Pulaski County police reported the search continued well into the night, and at about 12:20 a.m., Saturday (June 23), father and son were located in a "very remote area" by assisting personnel, with the assistance of the cellular telephone information and a drone provided by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department. Indiana Conservation Officers retrieved the child by wading through waist deep water to reunite him with family and a waiting ambulance as soon as possible.
The pair were located about three-quarters of a mile west of CR 6077N and CR 575W, west of Denham in Rich Grove Township, county police report.
Allen and his son were treated by Pulaski County EMS on scene. The child was released at the scene to his guardian. and Allen was later transported to Pulaski Memorial Hospital for treatment, and then transferred to another medical facility for further treatment of several medical issues, according to county police.
At this time, the incident is not a criminal investigation and no criminal charges are expected.
The search and rescue were conducted through a collaborative effort.
Agencies assisting with the search were the Indiana DNR Conservation Officers, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Valparaiso Police Department, Porter County Sheriff’s Department, Winamac Fire Department, Medaryville Fire Department, North Judson Fire Department, Bass Lake Fire Department, San Pierre Fire Department, Pulaski County EMS, and many civilian Samaritans who loaned ATV’s and assisted in the rescue effort.
